PALMERSTON NORTH.
Dear Bee, January 10. Things socially are very quiet at present, so many people are away at the seaside. We had perfect weather for the New Year holidays. Palmerston was deserted; large crowds went to Foxton to the sports;. others to the Foxton Heads and had a day by the sea, ■while excursion trains to the Rangitikei 'Races attracted the racing public. Picnicking parties went in all directions. One party arranged by the Misses Gimmel took an early train to Oroua and spent a delightful day. Mrs. Gemmel, Mrs. (Dr.) Martin, the Misses Gemmel, Waldegrave (2), Reed (2), Smith,' and (Messrs. Gemmel, Martin, Waldegrave (2), Caw, Rowe, Hunt, and others were present. The Palmerston tennis courts are veil patronised every day. On last Saturday there was a general tea, Mrs. Pickett acting as hostess. Amongst others playing were: Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Pickett, Mrs. Fuller, Miss F. Waldegrave. Mrs. Renell, Miss Porter, Miss A. Reed, Mrs. Bendall, Messrs. Thompson, Adams, Loughman. Smith. Hankins. Reed, ■Waldegrave, Collins, Clarke, Reedy, Pickett. Several local players went to Pahiatua and took part in the annual tournament. Miss Graham, of Palmerston, won the ladies’ championship singles, and the handicap singles. Messrs. Smith, Chesney, Collins, and G. Reed also went, but did not distinguish themselves in any way. Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Thompson, Miss Wilson, and Mr. and Mrs. W. Harden, of Palmerstoa, went to New Plymouth, and were interested spectators at the recent championship tennis meeting. The local tournament is progressing very slowly, perhaps now that all the holidays are over more enthu•iasia will be displayed.
