lhe Dundonald, a four-masted steel barqut 2,205 tons register, owned in Gla<sgov by Messrs. Kerr. Newton and Cc., sailed from Sydney on February 7t.. toi Falmouth, and till December 2nd nothing more was heard of her. and it was only when the Government steamer Ihnvii.oa returned to the Bluff with the ir. ember.-. of the scientific exhibition sent out by the Canterbury Philosophical Society that her fate was known. AVhen th. Hincinoa reached the Auckland Islands she found the survivors of the nrssing barque, and they had a pitiful tale to tell. On March 7th the Dundonald went ashore at Disappointment Island one of the Auckland group, in thick weather. and Captain Thornburn and eleven men were drowned. The other ii.eiiibem of the crew got ashore after min h difficulty. They lived on Disapp< intnient Island for several months, their only food being young mollyhawkH, seal- and roots, before some of their nnmler reached Port Hoss, where the « depot is situated, in a frail tnat made of branches and old Bails. Eventually nil were removed to the depot and there they remained til] rescued by the Bineuioa'e party.
