A LUNCHEON was given at Warner’s Hotel on Thursday by Mrs. Bealey, of ‘Tlororata.” The guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Bealey, Mr. Wales, Miss Russell, Miss Harley, Miss Handyside, Miss Deans, Miss Merton, and four of the officers.of H.M.s. Pioneer. Mrs, George Merton gave A PLEASANT EVENING at Park Terrace. Music and billiards ■were the amusements provided. Those present were: The Misses Merton (2), Kettle (2), Symes, Cracroft Wilson, Kitson, and Messrs. Jameson, De Passe, Hay, and Dr. Murphy. On Wednesday, at the grounds of the Croquet and Tennis Club, in Hagley Park, Mrs. Appleby had A GARDEN PARTY in honour of Miss Bailey, of Timaru, who is shortly to be married to Mr. Raymond Appleby. A large number of guests were present. A string band was in attendance. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn and in the pavilion, where the tables were charmingly arranged w'ith Iceland poppies and grasses. Mrs. Appleby wore a black and white muslin with braces of heliotrope ribbon, hat with flowers; Miss Bailey (Timaru), white embroidered linen, black hat with feathers; Miss Bruce, pink floral muslin, blue hat; Mrs. Chilton, cream cloth costume, cream hat; Mrs. Walter Stringer, handsome gown of silk voile, large black picture hat with ostrich feathers and green poppies; Mrs. W. A FAREWELL TEA was given by Miss Kathleen Thomas at Opawa, to a few of her girl friends, prior to her marriage, which takes place shortly, among the guests being the Misses Brett (2), Miss Humphreys, Miss Agnes Humphreys, the Misses Anderson (2), Miss Louisson, Miss Handyside, Miss Foley, and Miss Kitson. THE ROSE SHOW which was held yesterday in the Alexandra Hall was particularly successful, both in regard to the number and beauty of the exhibits and to the attendance. This season has been an excellent one for roses. Amongst the amateur prize winners were Mr. Murray-Aynsley, Mrs. Boyle, Mrs. Pyne, Mr. George Humphreys, Mr. Rhodes, Mr. Clarkson, Mr. Ronald Duncan, and Mr. W. H. Townend. A few of those pi esent during the afternoon were: Mrs. and Miss Elworthy, Mrs. and Miss Boyle, Mrs. Pyne, Mrs. Wigram, Mrs. Beswick, Mrs. and Miss Deans, Mrs. Ranald Macdonald, Mrs. Stead, Mrs. and Miss Pitman, Mrs. and Miss Reeves. Mrs. and Miss Kettle, the Misses Humphreys, Mrs. and Miss Wilding, the Misses Gerard and MurrayAynsley. AT AN EVENING PARTY given by Mrs. MacDonald (Me.rivale) on Thursday, a guessing competition caused great merriment. The winners were Miss MacDonald, Mr. Hazelden, ami Captain Willis, who won the booby prize.
