THE COMBINED EUCHRE AND BRIDGE PARTY, FOLLOWED BY A DANCE, organised by a large and influential committee of Auckland ladies, to raise funds for the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, took place in the Choral Hall last Thursday evening, and was a brilliant success. There were almost four hundred people present, and the entertainment .will certainly augment the funds of the socity. The prizes were unusually handsome, and were won by Mdlle. Cochc and Miss Nora Kissling and Mr Walker, who played bridge, and at the euchre Miss Bock, Mrs Culpan, Mr Munio Clark nnd Mr Syms were th? fortunate ones. Supper was served in the annexe, and the tables were delight fully decorated with yellow narcissi and white. Among such a crowd of keen card players it was rather difficult to sec the people one knew, and more to discover what everyone was wearing, so that I am afraid I overlooked many pretty toilettes, but here are a few 1 particularly noticed:—Mrs Devore, president of the ladies’ committee, wore a graceful gown of black chiffon taffeta, softened with black lace; Mrs Alexander were a becoming toilette of rich black silk with black lace tucker, and touches of pale blue on bodies;; Mrs Benjamin was wearing a tasteful gown of black silk combined with cream lace; Mrs F. E. Baume was strikingly gowned in pink chiffon taffeta, toned with velvet a shade darker and some pretty cream lace; Mrs Coleman, black chiffon taffeta, effectively trimmed with cream lac?; Mrs Cor bett was gowned in black with a pastel blue evening coat; Mrs Alfred Nathan wore a becoming black silk toilette, finished with a profusion of rich white lace; Mrs Sydney Nathan wore a lovely gown of black Spanish lace over white glace; Mrs Payton, rich black silk toned with cream lace; Mrs Archdale Tayler, dainty floral pcau de soie,softened with lace; Mrs Nelson, handsome black silk with lovely Maltese lace on berthe; Mrs Rathbone, black chiffon taffeta, brightened with cream lace; Mrs Myers, black silk with beautiful lace berthe; Mrs Arthur Myers was strikingly gowned in black and whi’e striped silk, with vest of white satin veiled in lace; Mrs Rainger, dainty toil etto of black satin, tastefully combined with black lace; Mrs Upfil. pretty cream colienne. trimmed with cream lace; Mrs Charlie Brown was wearing a pretty white gown with lace and touches of pale blue; Mrs Black wore crepe de chine with laee yoke; Mrs Smith, white silk and lace; Mrs Gavey was gowned in black with clusters of crimson roses on corsage; Mrs Houghton was .daintily attired in black and white with chine ribbon ceinture; Mrs Ralph wore a black skill and pretty heliotrope blouse; Miss Ralph, pale blue satin with crimson rosea on corsage; Mrs Montague wore an effec-

Dargavillc, Marks, Kenderdine, Graham, Phillips, Binney (2), Devon?, Sicilian, Dr. Eleanor Baker, Ilesketh, Preece, Frater, Kerr-Taylor (2). Tanton, Keesing, Davy, Conolly (2), Frater (2), Atkinson, Palmer, and many others. AN INVITATION CHAMBER CONCERT was given in St. Andrew’s Hall on Wednesday evening by five of our best known artists namely, Mrs. Macandrew, Miss Edith Whitelaw. L.R.A.M., Herr Louis Biitz, Mr. Colin Muston, L.R.A.M., and Mr. J. Shaw. The concert was of a high order of merit, and the large ami fashionable audience evinced its thorough appreciation of the talent displayed in its enthusiastic applause. All musiclovers are looking forward with pleasure to the series of four chamber concerts to be given this season by the promoters. True lovers of music can hardly have failed to notice the absence of “chamber music ” from the concert platform, which has long been a matter of regret. The programme will bo selected entirely from the works of the Great .Masters.
