A. J. Sawyer. photo. ALMOST A LOST ART. The sun set many years ago upon the art of Maori carving, and though attempts have been made to revive it they have failed simply because the Maoris’ present mode of life does not engender the weirdly mysterious line of thought of which his antient carvings were the symbol. The Maori still carves, but his work lacks the imagination which marks the examples of say a century ago. This panel, which is in a house at Te Aral, near Gisborne, is a very good specimen of modern art.
