The Borough Council of Onehunga, the Mount Roskill aud One Tree Hill Road Boards, having in contemplation the erection of a lamp and drinking fountain at the junction of the three districts, it was suggested by the Onehunga Liberal and Labour Federation —which also expressed its willingness to subscribe to the cost — that the time was opportune and the locality eminently suitable for the erection of a memorial to one of New Zealand’s greatest statesmen, the late Right Honourable R. J. Seddon, P.C., LL.D. The idea was adopted, and the three local bodies voted £100 towards its cost. As others have expressed a wish to contribute, it has been decided to make it a national memorial, and give everyone an opportunity of doing so. Herewith is a copy of the design chosen, which has met with much approval. The site on which it is proposed to erect it is unique, being the Royal Oak corner at the junction of six roads, as per locality sketched plan, the meeting point of three important districts, and on the highway between Onehunga and Auckland, traversing portion of Mt. Roskill, One Tree Hill and Epsom Road Districts, the boroughs of Newmarket and Parnell, also leading to Mt. Eden, Grey Lynn, Remuera, Otahuhu, and the Great North and South Roads. An Executive Committee has been appointed consisting of the Mayor of Onehunga (Mr. J. Rowe), chairman and treasurer; the Chairman of the Mount Roskill Road District (Mr. Charles Bagley), secretary; the Chairman of the One Tree Hill Road District (Mr. E. W. Burton), and the President of the Onehunga Liberal and Labour Federation (Mr. E. G. Allsworth), who will be glad to receive subscriptions to the fund. The architect is Mr. J. Park, Onehunga.
