Last week our American cousins celebrated their “ Glorious Fourth-,” the anniversary of the declaration of the inde-pnrdcm-e of the United States. The American Consul in Auckland (Mr. Prickett) received calls from the various Consuls resident in the eity. the Mayor, and other prominent officials, and Hags were displayed at all the consulates and several business places.

On July sth, at the workshop of Messrs. W. A. Ryan and Company, Limited, Mr. R. B. Spinks—who is proceeding this weew on a business visit to the States —was presented by Mr. James, the foreman, on behalf of himself and fellow-employees, with a very handsome travelling bag, as a mark of their esteem.

Mr Fred Prime, ironmonger, of Karan-galiape-road. leaves for Europe, via Vancouver, this week. Last week Mr. Prime was entertained to dinner at the Royal Mail Hotel by a number of friends, 43 sitting down. Mr W. J. Rees presided, and, on behalf of those present, handed to Mr Prime a handsome travelling rug and straps.

HAWKE’S BAY PROVINCE. Mr. E. J. Watt, of Napier, is in Sydney, on his way- to London. Miss Hitchings, of Levin, is on a holiday visit to Napier. Mr. and Mrs. Kettle, of Napier, are in Wellington for a few days. Mr. Tristram has returned to Napier from a holiday spent in the South. The Misses Nairn, from Pourere, have been on a visit to Napier. Miss Nation, of Hastings, is spending some weeks at Blackhead. M iss Thompson, of Christchurch, has been in Napier, the guest of Mrs. Paisley. The Misses Palmer, of Napier, have been spending some weeks in Wellington. Miss Simcox, of Porongahau, is visiting Napier. Mr. Dudley Kettle has left Napier for Wellington, en route to England. Mr. James McKay. Chief Inspector of Factories, has been spending a few days in Napier. Mr. and Mrs. P. Hankins have left Napier for London, where they intend to spend some months. Mr. Barton Hobbs, son of the Rev. J-ohu Hobbs, of Hastings, is leaving Johannesburg for a trip home to NewZealand. Mr. Hobbs has been five years in South Africa.

Chief Inspector of Schools, is at present in New Plymouth. Mr. P. Heyes. Commissioner of Taxes, Wellington, is on a short visit to New Plymouth. Mr. C. Hickson, Commissioner of Stamps. Wellington, is on a business visit to New Plymouth. Mr. Turton, of Omata. who has been on a visit to the Old Country, has returned to New Plymouth. The Hon. O. Samuel. M.L.C., and Mrs. Samuel, who have been on a visit to Japan. are expected to reach Wellington this week. Mr. W. Guerin, sub-editor of the “Taranaki Herald.“ has been appointed to the sub-editorial staff of the “Wellington Post.” Mr. J. S. Mr and Mrs Hol worthy are back in Wellington after a trip to Auckland and Rotorua. They have let their house at the Hutt nnd intend to live at Muritai for some time.

Mrs and Miss Logan, who have been away on a round-the-world trip, came back to Wellington a few days ago. They travelled from Cape Town by the T ongariro.

Mr and Mrs J. G. Wilson ißangitikei) are spending a week or two in Wellington. Mr Wilson has just been re-elect-ed President of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, a position which he has held for several years, in fact since its invent ion.

Mr. H. F. Gibbons, late manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston, was entertained at an banquet last week. During the evening a gold watch and chain, suitably inscribed, was presented to hrm from the leading citizens of the town. Mr. Gibbons has gone to Wellington to take up his new position as inspector of the bank in that city.

Sir David Masson. Lady Masson, and Mi-® Masson have arrived in Wellington, and are spending a few days in that eity. They have just finished a tour of the South Island, coming overland from the Southern Lakes to Nelson, via the Buller and Otira Gorges. They leave in a day or so for Auckland, via Wanganui and the Hot Lakes. After Auckland they continue their journey homewards to India, where they live in the Punjaub district.
