OBITUARY.
THE LAIE MR. « JI. Mel.Al GHLIN. The death occurred on .June 12th «>f Mr \\ in. Mvluiughlin. <»l Puhi nui. I'apatoi toi. a well -ki own sportsman. both in hunting and rating elides. Some years ago he had a fall from a horse, and though the injury received was partially recovered from, complications developed, and Mr. Melui ughlin became seriously ‘ill. An operation was performed on Sunday week by Dis. Savage. Scott. Pabst ami Bull, and was apparently successful, and he continued to improve* until June 12th. when his condition became worse, and he died somewhat suddenly. Mr. McLaughlin was born in Peru. South America, in 1837. and in 18G2 he came to New Zealand. settling on the Piihinui estate, which had been acquired bv his
father. He has resided on this pioperty ever since with the exception of two yea i which he spent in England, from 1889 to JBSS. Mr. Mcl.iiighlin took his part m the defence ol Auckland at the time jf the Waikato war. Mr. Mei.aughlin was a keen hunts man. ami with Mr. Robert M< Lean, of llowick. foumled tin* Pakuranga Hunt (liib in 1872. He took a keen i» 1 erest in racing matters. ami wa* a menilwr of the \iieklaml Racing ( Inks Committee since Hie foundation of the club in 1877. being the last Bill* \i\or ot the original committee. H< was also one of the founders of the Auckland Club. of which he was a mem bcr ot the committee fiom its initiation. Mr. McLaughlin’s unixersal popularity need not be emphasised. \ good com panion and brimming over with genrr osil \ . he was happiest in showing bo-pi talitv to hi> mans triends.
