“THE TIFFIN."
AUCKLAND'S LATEST \ND MOST UP-TO-DATE RESTAIRANT AND TEA ROOM. On Saturday last there was opened in Auckland a restaurant ami afternoon tea rooms, which, in the point of spaciousness. situation, artistic furnishing and completeness of culinary outfit, must equal anytning our side of the line. They certainly completely distance anything heretofore seen in the northern capital, and do credit to the gentlemen to whose enterprise the city is indebted for its latest dining resort, and to the architects. fitters, and others to whom the interior arrangements were entrusted. The entrance is from Queen street, and the main diningroom occupies the entire first floor of the handsome and imposing City Chambers, just completed on the site of
the old Theatre Royal, later known as the City Hall. As will be seen from our photograph the main diningroom is one of the largest in the southern hemishere. seating, as it doe-, upwards of 300 guests at one time without any crowding of the tables. The furnishing scheme while simple is the acme of artistic utility and comelv comfort, while the excellent good taste which characterises this is also distinctively observable in the decorative ami lighting treatment, both of which are carried out in a manner -which reflect tim very highest credit on Mr. Gerald Jones, the capable young architect who personally planned and supervised every detail, even down to the stencils of the Liberty school window hangings. To have evolved and to have carried through so original a scheme in a manner so strikingly effective, and so completely successful, is no small distinction. and Mr. Jones is to be warmly congratulated, and the directors also, in having entrusted the work to him and in leaving his hands entirely unfettered. The kitchens are most elaborately fitted with all the very 7 latest scientific apparatus for the preparation and per-
feet cooking of food from the most elaborate banquet to the simple grill. The battery contains a vast oven and all appliances for the trade, from the halfpenny roll to the four tier wedding cake. Every class of catering is to be the metier of the Company. It will give you an every day dinner perfectly cooked from 12 to 2. afternoon tea will be served from 2 to 5. ami during the “ ladies hours” a Tillin special orchestra will play ns also from seven to ten in the evening. The tariff is very, moderate, and while those satisfied with the plain fare of excellent roast and boiled, common to most colonial restaurants, will have their wants assiduously studied, those in search of gastronomic luxuries not hitherto obtainable at any local restaurant, will be able here to procure the same and at a very moderate cost. Banquets, dinner parties, ball suppers, etc., etc., will naturally be a feature. The new rooms will be used no doubt very largely for entertaining purposes by private hosts and hostesses, and how pleasantly this may be done was shown on Friday last when the directors gave an inaugural afternoon reception to their friends. Mr. Alfred Nathan acting as host.
