EVOLUTION OF THE COIFFURE.
Showing the inodes of hairdressing in each century from the 12th to the 19th, w th the present day mode in the centre of the picture.
Picturesque though they undoubtedly were, the coiffures of bygone beauties as portrayed on this page are on the whole calculated to make us particularly well pleased with the superior smartness and piquant prettiness of the hairdressing of this present year of grace, though there is,
of course, just the possibility that faithful followers of future fashions will look with just as calm and almost condescending superiority on what we now consider the perfection of style. And certainly it cannot lay claim to an entire originality, its family likeness
to the coiffure of the sixteenth century, for example, being distinctly marked, while then again have we not quite recently gone back to the twelfth century inspiration for the quaint jewelled cap as a completion for the evening head-dress of the jeune fille?
However, whatever your private opinion may be as to the strikingly contrasted styles which have marked the evolution of the coiffure, you will assuredly be glad to avail yourself of their suggestions during the forthcoming season of fancy dress balls, head-dress dinners, and the like.
