Dear Bee, January 2. "A Happy New Year” was the refrain heard at the enormous gathering which took place in the Exliibition grounds on New’ Year's Eve to witness Pain's fireworks. A really fine display was made, although the moon shone so brightly; still the effect was magnificent against the background of trees which surround Hagley Park. People of all ages and conditions were present. The total attendance for the day and evening amounted to 29,131. THE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP MEET-’ ING on the United Club’s grounds in Hagley Park has been a great attraction during this week. Parker, Wilding. Heath, Cox. Quill, Bauchop. and Dr. Bett. Several sets of tennis were played, and a most enjoyable time spent by those present. A SMALL BRIDGE PARTY was given on Thursday evening by the Misses Murray-Ay nsley. The guests were: Mrs. Lindo Ferguson (Dunedin), Mrs. and Miss Pitman. Mrs. Beswick, Miss Reeves. Mrs. J. Dryden Hall. Miss Denniston, Mrs. T. Cowlishaw. and Miss Webster. A DANCE was given last Friday at ‘‘Warwick House.’’ Armagh-street by Mr-. Walter Stringer Mrs. Leslie Brown (Fiji). Mr. Longden, and Mr. A. Denniston. Jt was quite an impromptu affair, and highly successful and enjoyable, as such things usually are. Dancing took place in the bi 1 lard-room, the table and carpet having been previously removed. A dainty

supper was srrwd, and altogether it was a delight ail dance. Rus sell, pink and blue floral taffetas; Miss D. Anderson, froik of pale pink mousseline de soie. and dram lace; Mi-s Capp (Melbourne), white chiffon taffetas and lace; Miss Molineaux. pretty fiock of white cmb.oidered muslin; Miss Reece, white'satin and chiffon; Miss lemon-coloured g.ui/e, with touches of heliotrope; Miss Prin-, white satin, with scarlet Hower* and *a*h; Miss Rita Wilson, white silk and chiffon; Mrs. C. COMING EVENTS Sir John Hall (Mayor of Chri-tchurch) and Mrs. .T. Craeroft Wil*on are giving a dance in the Alexandra Hall in honour of the visit of the Marylebone cricket team.
