Dear Bee, January 4. There was a complete change in the weather on Saturday last, THE THIRD DAY OF THE PALMERSTON RACES. Tlie intense heat of the first two days was replaced by a cold wind off the hills, which, I think, most people preferred. The attendance was again good. Among other ladies present were: Mrs. W. Moeller. Mr. McGill. Dr. Pope. Miss Armstrong, Mr. and Mrs. A. Bell. Mrs. J. Bell. Mrs. Tripe, Mr. and Mrs. Mcßae, Miss Hankins. Mr. Sim. Mr. Haynes were a few present from here. The Rangitikei races on the Ist and 2nd of January were fortunate in having two beautiful days, although the heat was intense. Crowded trains went from Palmerston, and numbers motored or drove the 20 miles by road. Air. and Airs. Moeller. Air. AlcGill. Mrs. Warburton. Air. and Airs. A. W. Bell. Airs. J. Bell. Airs. Tripe. Air. P. Sim. Air. J. Al. Johnston were among others from Palmerston. Mrs. Walter Strang gave A DELIGHTFI L DANCE at her residence. Awapuni. on Thursday, the second night of the Palmerston races. There were several visitors present from Wellington and other places. The arrangements were perfect, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves despite the heat, which was tropical. Th- guests include.! On New Year's Day a small picnic party of young people drove from Palmerston to Oroua. a distance of eight or ten miles, ( limbing sand-hills, ete.. which at any other time would be considered unbearable in the heat, proved most fascinating pastimes. The Misses Gemmell, Air. Gemniel. Aliss Frances Waldegrave. Air. R. Waldegrave, Miss Porter. Aliss Fitzherbert. Alessrs. Collins. Spencer. Numerous other picnic parties went to the gorge on the Tiritea. TENNIS. Tennis has been played a lot during the holidays. A team from the Palmerston Tenuis Club journeyed to Otaki by train on the 2nd inst., and played si shield inateii resulting in a loss for Palmerston. Atost of our good players were unavailable on account of the holidays, consequently a weak team were soundly siefeated by the country club. It is only fair to the ladies of the team to say they won their matches easily, but the men all suffered defeat badly in their singles. Those playing for Palmerston were the Misses Dol'd and Fitzherbert, and Alessrs. Harden, Smith. Collins, Chesney. R. Waldegrave and Guy Reed. The Otaki players. Alesdames D’Ath and Swabey. and Messrs. Kirk, Simeox. Hartmann. Al. Simeox, Brown and Penn. Aliss I. Graham, of the Campbell-street tenuis club. Palmerston North, has been very successful at a tournament played at Pahiatua during the Christmas holidays. winning the ladies' ehampionship singles, the ladies’ doubles and combined doubles. Airs. Lionel Abraham, Air. Loughnan. and Ah's. Slack have all entertained friends at tennis during the week. Airs. R. S. Abraham gave an impromptu, dance at her residence. Fitzherbert, on Thursday evening. The hall made a delightfully cool ballroom. Mr. and Airs. Harold Abraham, the Misses Abraham, teh Alisses Handyside, Aliss Fitzherbert the Alisses Handyside, Miss Wilson, AH'. H. Wilson, (Manilla).
