AUCKLAND PROVINCE. Mr G. Kronfeld was a passenger for the Islands by the Atua last week. Mr. A. Dewing has returned to Gisborne after a visit to England. Mr. and Mrs. Eliott (Gisborne) have been visiting Napier. Miss Seager, of Auckland, is visiting Miss Mitford, in Wellington. , Mr. and Mrs. Hookey, who have been living in Wanganui for some time., are back in Gisborne. , Mr. and Mrs. 11. Sherratt (Gisborne), who have been in Hawke’s Bay for the Show, have returned home. Mr. W. ShuttlewoTth, who lias been on an extended visit to the East and the Old Country, returned to Auckland last week. Mr J. C. Macky, of Macky, Bogan, Steen and Co. returned by the Rotiti last week from a short visit to Wellington. Mr. 11. F. Seager, of Auckland, is spending a short holiday at the Pacific Cable Station, Doubtless Bay. He is the guest of Mr. Hertslett (superintendent). Captain, Mrs and Miss Worsp, after spending the winter months at the Grand Hotel, Auckland, have returned to their home in the country. The Misses B. and I. Spedding, who have been on a trip to the Old Country, returned to Auckland by the Zealandia on Sunday. Mr. Gerald Ralph, a young Auckland violinist, has been chosen as a member of the Exhibition orchestra, and will play with the first violins. Mr A. E. Ralph, who is coming to 'Auckland as coach for the Eden Cricket Club, is on board the R.M.S. Monltan, which arrived at Fremantle last week. He is accompanied by Mrs. Ralph. .Mr. Thomas Cotter and Miss Millie Cotter left Auckland on Monday for Sydney, where they will join Mrs and the Misses Cotter, who are now on their way out from England. They afterwards go on to Melbourne for- cup week. Mr. W. R. Holmes went South by the Rarawa on Sunday, to attend to the final details of the Auckland Court at the International Exhibition. He will return about the 9th or 10th of November. Mr. Ramsay MacDohald, M.P. for Leicester, and a leading member of the Labour party in the British House of Commons, arrived by the Zealandia on Sunday from Sydney. He is accompanied by Mrs. MacDonald. Mr. B. Savage, of Cambridge, who is about to take up his residence in Parnell, was last week entertained at a farewell social, the deputy - mayor (Mr. E. J. Wilkinson) presiding. During the evening Mr. Savage was presented with a gold sovereign case. Mr. James Steel, of the Auckland Weekly News, was last week presented by the staff of that paper, and the reporting staff of the New Zealand Herald With a travelling bag, toilet case, pocketbook, and pipe, the presentation being a farewell one, as the recipient is about to leave Auckland to take over the editorship of a country newspaper. On Monday week at the gun-room, prior to dismissing the men. Captain Forbes, on behalf of No. 8 Company N.Z.G.A.V., presented Major Patterson with a splendid photographic album of the company which he had commanded for some years. The Major replied in a feeling manner, thanking the members of the company for their token of esteem. On the front cover of the. album are two silver shields, one bearing the Major’s monogram and the other the company’s badge. The first page contains the following inscription: — “Presented to Major G. W. 8. Patterson by the members of No. 8 Company N.Z.G.A. Volunteers -(late Ponsonby Navals) as a token of esteem and regard on the occasion of his promotion i o the command of Auckland division N.Z.G.A. Volunteers.” Mr. Frank Bartley, son of Mr. Walter Bartley, of Ponsonby, left by the Victoria on Monday en route for Shanghai. where he has received ah appointment as city surveyor and engineer to the Shanghai municipality at £5OO a year. Mr. Bartley is an example of what can be done under the education system in this colony. He started at Ponsonby public school, took a Rawlings scholarship at eleven years of age, and his education since then has practically been free, for by means of various other scholarships he passed through the Grammar School and the University. He was for some short while at Thames School of Mines, then was appointed to the Government Survey Department. Finally he accepted the appointment at Shanghai, which is an exceedingly good record for an Auckland boy, even nowonly twenty-six years of age. HAWKE'S BAY PROVINCE. Miss Burke (Napier) is visiting friends in Gisborne. Miss Brandon, of Wanganui, is spending some weeks in Napier. Miss K. Maunder, of Ashhurst, is spending a few days in Napier. Miss Graham, of Auckland, is on a short visit to Napier. Miss Hetley is spending a few weeks in the country. Miss D. Kennedy is spending some weeks in Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. Macfarlane, of Takepu, are spending some weeks iu Napier. Mrs. C. Johnstone, of Hastings, is spending a few days in Napier. Mr. and Mrs. Furlong, of Wanganui, are in Napier for a few days. Mrs. Gregory, of Woodville, is in Napier for a few days, and .is the guest of Mrs. Dinwiddle. Miss Griffin has returned to Christ church after spending some months in Napier. Lady Whitmore, accompanied by Mrs. Dixon, has returned to Napier, after spending some weeks in Masterton. Mr. and Mrs. Trent have returned to Napier after spending a short visit in Blenheim. Mrs. Von Dadelzon has returned to Whana Whana after- spending a week in Napier. Mrs. C. F.. Mackay (Wanganui), with her little daughter, are staying for a short time in Stratford. Lady Ward, of Wellington, is spending a few weeks in Napier, and is the guest oi Mrs. Boyse. Mrs. and Miss Leggitt have returned to Nelson after spending some weeks in Napier. t —" TARANAKI PROVINCE. Mr. G. W. Henderson is at present in New Plymouth. Mr. F. Whittle, after his pleasant trip to Sydney, has returned to his home in New Plymouth. Mr. H. M. Bauehope has left New Plymouth for the East Coast, where he has acquired a sheep run. Mr. Robertson, of Mr. D. Laing’s seed and produce business, New Plymouth, has left for Auckland, where he will start a business for himself.

Messrs. Stanley Collis and Erie Georg:were presented with greenstone and gold pendants on the eve of their departure from tlieir fellow employees at Messrs. Okey and Rollo's foundry. At the High School, New Plymouth, last week, on the occasion of his leaving Mr. Blain was presented with a handsome pipe and ease. Master Harry Cooke, on behalf of the pupils, made the presentation. At the Taranaki Club a large number of members met together the other day to bid farewell to Mr. G. Manuering. who is leaving shortly for Timaru. The staff of the Virion Bank have presented Mr. Mannering with a silver-mounted tobaeeo pouch. Mr. J. C. George, who left New Plymouth for Hawera last week, en route for England, was so ill when he reached Hawera that further travelling was out of-the question, so he returned to New Plymouth, and will not be permitted by his medical adviser to continue bis journey for at least four weeks. WELLINGTON PROVINCE. Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, of Wanganui, are back from their visit to Sydney. Mr. It. Grace, of Wanganui, has re turned from his trip to Auckland. Professor Von Zedlitz, of Wellington, is staying in Wanganui. Miss Larkin has returned to Wellington after a trip to Sydney. Mrs. Gilmer is back in Wellington after a few weeks in Australia. Miss Cachemaille is hack in Wellington after a stay in Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. Hume (Wairarapat were in Wellington lately lor a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Muir (Gisborne) have been visiting Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Doble arrived in Wellington. from South Africa last week. Mrs. and Miss Clojrston (Marlborough) arc visiting Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Malet (Christchurch) have been making a stay in Wellington. Mrs. Rhodes (Christchurch) is on a short visit to Wellington. Mrs. Lovett (Bulls) was a visitor to Palmerston last week. Miss Hector has returned to Wellington after a stay in Blenheim. Mr. and Mrs. H. Good, of Hawera, have returned from Australia, and are staying in Wanganui with Mrs. Earle. Major Spencer, of Timaru, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. Izard, in Wanganui. The Misses . Christie, of W anganui, have returned from their trip to Auckland and Rotorua. Mrs. A. Fitzherbert. of Feilding, who has been staying in Wanganui, has returned to her home. Mr. D. Alicrerombie is back in Wellington after a six months’ trip to the Old Country. Mrs. D. Nathan has returned to Wellington after a short absence in the country. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Lysaght (Hawera) are in Wellington at present, staying with Mr. and Mrs. Stowe, Tinakori-rotul. Miss Hoggard (Wellington) has gone to Nelson for a visit to her relations there. Mrs. Harrison, who has been visiting Mrs. If. Harding (Wellington), has returned to Taranaki. Miss Helmore (Christchurch) is in Wellington for a visit to Mrs. Macpherson, Hobson-street. Miss Horton (Auckland) has been the guest ot Mrs. Tolhurst (Wellington) for a week or two. Dr. Cockayne, who has been vi-iting Wellington and the Manawata district, has returned to Christchurch. Miss E. Fell, who has been staying with Mrs. Dillon. Blenheim, is back in Wellington again. Miss Stafford has returned to Wellington after a stay in Blenheim, where she was the guest of Mrs. -Seymour. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Abraham. Palmerston North, have returned from their wedding trip. Miss Robieson, Masterton, is staying with her sister, Mrs. Freetlt, Palmerston North, Mrs. Miles (Wellington) is staying with Mrs. Handyside. Awapuni, Palmerston North.

I>r. and Mrs. Napier-Maclean, who r«cently ret rued to Wellington after travelling in America and Canada, hava taken a house on Wesley-road. The Hon. C. J. anil Mrs. Johnston (Karori, Wellington), intend going to England early next year. Miss Doris Johnston will accompany them. Mrs. Freeth, New Plymouth, who aaa just returned from a trip Home, is the guest of her son, Mr. P. C. Freeth, Palmerston North. Mrs. Napier-Bell, who has been staying in Wellington for a month or two, has gone to Rotorua for a stay of some weeks. She intends to return to Wellington latei or before going to England. 101. and Mrs. Chaytor (Wellington) went to Spring Creek. Marlborough, for the marriage of Miss E. Chaytor. They were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Chaytor during their stay. Mr. and Mrs. Elgar (Wairarapa) are back in New Zealand, after a very pleasant trip to Japan. They were away about six months, during which they also went to Australia and China. The Rev. A. Hansell and Mis. Hansell, who have been to England for six months, are on their way back to New Zealand, and will reach Wellington next week. Dr. and Mrs. Pollen, are back in Wellington after a visit to Nelson. Mrs. and Miss Hunter Brown, who came across at the same time, are staying with Dr. and Mrs. Pollen. Miss Frances Chaytor, who has been visiting relations in the Old Country for the least two years, eatne back by the lonic last week. Miss B. Chaytor came over from Benheim to meet her, and after a day or two in Wellington they returned to "Marshlands.” Mr. and Mrs. Piteaithley arrived in Wellington from England by the lonic. The former is the new director of the Technical School, and comes with very high testimonials indeed. Mr. and Mrs. Piteaithley were only married a week or two before they left for New Zealand, so the voyage out was practically their wedding journey. Mr Donald Robertson, chief clerk :a the Postal Department, is mentioned as being a probable appointee to the position of assistant-secretary, made vacant by the death of Mr Thomas Rose, while Mr F. V. Waters will probably succeed Mr Robertson as chief clerk. Mr Robertson is a native of Dunedin, and at the age of 21 he entered the Post Office there as a cadet in 1881. After spending two years as senior money order clerk at Wellington, he occupied a similar post at Auckland for nine years, and in 1892 he was promoted to the chief clerkship, wheh ho has held since. Mr Waters is same age as Mr Robertson and was born at Melbourne. He arrived in the colony very young, however, ami received his education at Nelson, entering the Postal Department in 1874. Since 1878 ho has been stationed in Wellington, where lie is welt known as a singer of some local note. Mr. A. 11. Donald returned by the Sierra from Sydney last week. SOUTH ISIAND. Mrs. Denniston and Mrs. Wigrain have returned to Christchurch from Wellington. Mr. Geo. G. St-ad and Miss Stead have returned from Sydney to Christchurch. Mrs. Frank Graham (Christchurch) is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Lc Cren, at Parnell, Auckland. Mr-. Cuthbert Grcsson (Timnnj,) is staying with Mrs. Hugh Reeves at the D artery, Christchurch. Mrs. Julius has returned to Christchure'.i from Timaru, where she was the guest of Mrs. Arthur Elworthy. Mr. and Mrs. Cobham are back Pnpauui after spending some months at Sumner.
