EULOGIES BY PUBLIC MEN.

THE PREMIER OF NEW SOUTH WALES. The Premier of New South Wales (Mr Carruthers) was much affected by the news. “Mr Seddon's death,” he said, “has come as a terrible shock to us all, and especially to those who were brought into contact with him during his recent visit. “I saw him on Saturday afternoon, when I called at the Australia to say 'Good-bye' to him before he took steamer to New Zealand. He looked very tired, and was very pale. I noticed the change front the ruddy glow of health that he had during his stay here a fortnight since, but 1 forebore to mention the fact to him. He was not the same man in health or spirits that left here a few days ago, and it was evident that, instead of resting, as he intended to do, he had given himself little or no real rest in tire States. However, with all that, he looked to have a long lease, of life, and it is simply unnerving to think that my ‘Good-bye’ to him was a ‘long, last farewell.’ I look upon Mr Seddon as having been one of the truly great men of our Australasian public life—forceful, earnest and sympathetic. His end is a great loss to New Zealand, and this will be reflected in Australia. I have sent messages of sympathy to Airs Seddon and family, and also to the New Zealand people. Everyone was desirous of doing far more for the bereaved widow and family, but all recognised how sacred should be the wish of Mrs Seddon for as little demonstration as possible.”
