Mr. Booth, who is a wealthy Liverpool “merchant prince” of a hard-working, strenuous type, in which the great port of the Mersey seems especiallv fortunate. is a man who has literally devoted his life to the service of humanity. He is absolutely the greatest authority in the world on the vital problem of pauperism. and his statistical and other works on this subject have created for
him a reputation which will live in the history of our time*, ami which ha* been of incalculable immediate usefulness to all who interest themselves in the carand management of their less fortunate fellow creature*. Hi* works on thi* subject include. Life and Labour of the People in London—several volume*, and published between I*9l and 1903: Pauperism. A Picture; The Endowment of Ohl Age. 1892: The Aged Poor Condition. 1894; old Age Pension*. 1899. Mr. Booth is a generous patron of the arts, and possesses many nne picture* be*ide* the one he has so generously sent out for our education and delight.
This celebrated artist, who is n >w- 79 years of age. was one of the three founders of the pre-Raphael movement. He has painted many great pictures, most of the subjects being taken from the '-acred Writings.
who i* on an extended visit to New Zealand to work up the cause of the Young Men's Christian Association. On April 24. Mr. Budge was tendered a luncheon by the Auckland A .M.C.A.. and his first work will be the wiping out of the debt on that institution.
