Mr. J. Barr, of the Parliamentary and literary statf of the New Zealand “Times'’ in Wellington, is the latest New Zealander to be appointed to the literary staff of the “Sydney Daily Telegraph.’ The Rev. Dr. Murray, C.S.S.R., who has been conducting a retreat for the Auckland R.C. clergy, left Auckland on. Monday for Sydney to open a retreat for the Cardinal and his clergy. Mr E. E. Willoughby has been appointed district superintendent of the Provident Life Insurance Company of Dunedin, with complete charge of the* company’s Auckland business. Miss Brown, daughter of Professor F. Brown, is making a good recovery from the inuries received through being knocked down by an express cart in Dunedin last Thursday. Captain F. E. N. Gaudin, ad jutant of of the No. 1 Infantry Battalion, w nt to the Islands bv the Taviuni. Lieutzm nt Dawson, of the College Rides, is taking his plaee meanwhile. Lieut. Robinson, Engineer Staff Officer of the colony, arrives in Auckland in a few days to attend the Engineer’s camp of instruction. Sergi.-Major Russell has arrived to take part in the camo.

A presentation was made last week at Mr. Tooman’s auction looms to Mr. Leonard Townley, of the office staff. Mr. C. Bagley, on behalf of a number of friends, presented Mr. Townley with a purse of sovereigns, and asked him to buy therewith a wedding present. Mr W. J. White, who recently passed his examination in Auckland as chief engineer, has been appointed to the Union Steamship Company's steamer Kittawa. He is a son of Mr T. H. White, of the Kauri Timber Company.

Mr J. Tippling, who has been in control of the industries and commerce branch of the Tourist Department at Dunedin, has taken over the tourist bureau there, vice Mr G. C. Moon, who takes charge of the tourist bureau at Christchurch. Mr Moon takes the place of Mr W. R. Blow, transferred to Invercargill. Sir Robert Pullar, of Perth (Scotland), arrived in Auckland by the Waikare last night. He was the guest at the viceregal garden party this afternoon. Sir Robert Pullar, who is staying at the Grand Hotel, is head of the firm of dyemakers that bears his name, and he is making a tour of the colonies on pleasure bent. He resumed his journey on Monday, going through Australia to the east. Mr W. J. Culver, general secretary of the Liberal and Labour Federation of New Zealand, has been presented with an iluminated address and a purse of sovereigns in recognition of his services to the party. A presentation was also made to Mrs Culver. Among those at the function were Sir Joseph Ward, the Hons. Pitt, Duncan, and Mills. Dr. Choyee, son of Mr H. C. Choyee, who has been studying for some years in England, has succeeded in qualifying for his diploma as F.R.C.S., Eng. Dr. Choyee has recently been placed in charge of the Greenwich. Seaman’s Hospital, and also superintendent of the new London School of Clinical Medicine.

Liept. Knyvett, of the No. 9 Garrison Artillery, has passed both the theoretical and practical parts of his examination for his commission, the practical part being concluded during the recent camp. Lieut. Aylett also passed the practical part of his examination, and will shortly sit for the theoretical side. Sergeant Wright, who has been acting chief clerk in the Police Commissioner’s office at Wellington, since the death ot Mr John Tasker, has been promoted to the rank of Sub-inspector, and will remain in charge of the Commissioner's office. Sub-iuspector Wright is a popular officer, and has a first class record.

A pleasant little ceremony took place at the residence of Miss Eileen Hill, of Ponsonliy, last week, with a number of her friends gathered to present her with a set of silver fish knives and forks and eggstand, in honour of her approaching marriage to Mr. Leslie Ross, of Christchurch.

The Premier (the Right Hou. R. J. Seddon) has announced that if he can manage it he will visit Australia in about three months’ time. This statement he made in acknowledging a resolution of congratulation passed by Maoriland residents of Kalgoorlie after the elections. The Premier is to be present at a banquet given iff honour of Mr Ross, M.H.R., at Pubiatua, to-night.
