AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, December 27. BOXING DAY AT ELLERSLIE. With a record attendance at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, when the Auckland Racing Club opened their Summer Meeting, it was only natural that the lawn should make a brilliant spectacle between the races. There were so many people there and so many charming frocks were worn that one cannot remember anything like all of then:. Some I noticed were:

Lady Plunket wore a lovely gown of shrimp pink crepe de chine, with a Vshaped yoke of cream Valenciennes lace, becoming white plumed toque, and a black and white feather stole; Hon. Kathleen Plunket was daintily gowned in white Lcuisinc with a charming white hat garlanded with pink roses; Mrs. Braithwaite wore a pale grey' spotted silk grenadine, grey chiffon toque, with cream lace and pink roses; Miss Braithwaite, in a smart white linen costume, with a dainty white vest,white Tricorn hat with bows of blue ribbon; Mrs. A. Myers was attired in a charming floral chiffon over white glace, and a Tuscan hat swathed with blue, and some shaded plumes; Mrs Gorrie, in a charming cream embroidered voile with a dainty violet toque; Mrs W. A inost enjoyable garden party was held at Clevedon House, Remuera, on Tuesday, December 19, to celebrate the. Ladies’ College speech day. The beautiful grounds surrounding the College form an ideal spot for such entertainments, especially when the weather is so favourable as it wan on thia occasion. A marked feature of the proceedings was the absence of all that formality which usually renders priaegiring so tedious to these not immediately concerned. About three o’clock the guests bega u to arrive, and every tram brought reinforcements, till quite a large number had. assembled on the-terraces to watch a graceful exhibition of drill given Sr the pupils. Thio over, the distribuon of the prizes took place on the

lawn, and then it was that we appreciated the laek of formality in tire programme. For instead of being (OmpelWd to assemble hi a hot room and to listen to unending we seated oursehce at will under the shady trees on the sloping sides of the lawn or else on the lawn itself, while the pupils were aKo wed the same freedom of choice. In the middle of this irregular circle was placed a tabic laden with prizes, which the Rev. W. Beatty kindly distribute!!. The chief prize was the scholarship, consisting of one year’s free tuition at the College, and on this oecasion the fortunate winner was Miss Eileen Schischka. The pupils took the opportunity to present Mrs. Moore-Jones with a handsome silver-mounted salad bowl and ladles as a token of their affection. Delicious afternoon tea was served, while a band played at intervals. Many of the guests found their way into the schoolrooms, where the pupils’ drawing, painting, wood-carving, and sewing were exhibited. Tlile paintings which covered a wide range of subjects, were especially good.
