Cook, black silk: Mrs Blunt, pale grey satin and white lace: Mrs Wall looked well in black tulle and orange chiffon: Mi«s Moreland. black crepe de chine: Mrs Finch, cream silk with touches of primrose: Mrs Purchas wore black: Dr. Alice Moorhouse, a rich violet >rivet; Mrs Andrew Anderson, cream silk and lace; Miss Gibson won* black net; Mrs BevanBrown. black velvet: Mrs Gray (Port Chalmers), pale blue crepe de chine; Mrs Morton -Anderson. black velvet and lace: Mrs Carry-11 ill. cream crepe de chi in l : Mis- Bowen wore a pretty gown of black and pale blur; Mrs Thacker, pale blue silk and lace: Mrs Waymouth, grey accordion-pleated voile over grey silk: Mrs 11 urst-Seagcr. brown velvet; Mrs Stevenson, black net over white silk. Others present were Dr. and Mrs Coleridge Farr. Professors Cook. Blunt and Wall. Dr. and Mrs Jennings, Mr ami Mr* Gilbert Anderson. Professor and Mrs Scott, Dr. and Mrs llilgendorf. Dr. Talbot. Dr. and Mrs Cockayne. Mr and Mrs Gray. Bev. and Mrs Mackenzie. Mr and Mrs Alfred Merlon. Mr and Mrs Mayne. Dr. ami Mrs Evans. Miss Bullen. Hr. and Mrs Crooke. Archdeacon Averill, Mr Bevan-Brown. Messrs Ihirst-Seager, Carey-Hill, Laing, and Mr and Mrs Price. Some delightful songs were sung by Mrs ( hilton, Colonel Banchop. and Airs Price, and Mrs Wilding and Dr. Crooke rendered pianofoite solos. During the evening Professor Rutherford won ail hearts by showing us the wonderful effect of radium. The light emitted from a tiny spec of that valuable and precious meta! was clearly visible through one’s hand, through wood, and various other things. Afterwards dainty refreshments were served, and. of course, there was ample opportunity for eonversat ion. Professor Rutherford was welcomed and received by his “Alma Mater” at Canterbury College Hall last night, when A CONVERSAZIONE was held in hi* honour. Mr ( has. Lewis C hairman of the Board of Governors) presided, and there were also present the members of the Board of Governors, the Professorial Board of the College, the students, and about three hundred guests. The proceedings throughout were most enthusiastic. ami Professor Rutherford expressed his grat i fieat ion
at the heartiness of the welcome accorded to him. Several musical items were given, and the serving of supper concluded a very delightful evening. Denniston, Rutherford, Kettle and Symes. Invitations have been issued for an “At Home,** and also a euchre party, by Mrs Newton. Braley Avenue, in honour of the visit of her son-in-law. Professor Rutherford. On Thursday afternoon Mrs C. C. ami the Misses Cook gave an Al THORS* AND TITLES’ ” TEA, in honour of their guest. Miss Joachim (Dunedin). Each guest was given ;i paper, on which was written the name of a book, and the game was to hunt about the room and find the name of the author, which had been written on paper and hidden. The prize, a book, was won by whoever most quickly found the author wanted. Miss Mating was the successful guest. The Misses Bowen. Burns. Anderson. Acland. Campbell, Mills. Or be! I. Peache. Ensor, Macdonald, Deans, Kitsofl. Denniston, Mesdames Burns and Blunt, Misses Moore ami Reeves were present. MISS TITTEL BRI NE left last week for Dunedin. Quite a number of parties were given in her honour. A luncheon by Mrs J. Palmer, an afternoon bridge party by Mrs J. D. Mall, and a luncheon by Mrs Wilding, were among the festivities. During Miss- Tit tel-Brune’s visit here she several times played golf, and patronised the skating rink, and on Sunday, which was an ideal day, she joined a party of friends, and went for a long ride on horseback. The theatre was so crowded each night of the Williamson Company's season that at last we are waking up to the fact that our theatre is unworthy of our city. The Mayor spoke on the subject yesterday at the City Council meeting, and suggested the advisability of building a Municipal Theatre, and I heai- that bis suggestion is bring favourably discussed among business men. THE GOLF LINKS. On Monday the final for the handicap tournament played off between Mrs. Michael Campbell, and Miss P. Harley was won by Mrs. Campbell. The prize was a golf club. For the Shirley Monthly Medal. Mis- Stead and Miss Nora Campbell tied. and the game was played over again with similar results, so they have to play off again. The champion-hip matches liegiii this week at Shindy. In Aiigu-t the championship of New Zealand will be played for in Napier. Several of our strongest players intend to com petr. At llagley a handicap tournament is being played for a prize presented by Airs. Murray-Aynsley. Two rounds are nff. and the players still in are Mrs. Wigram. Mrs. Bogle, Miss Rutherford. and Mbs Wilson. A tIOI’SE PARTY. Mrs. ami Miss Ensor entertained a house party at their country home. Mt. Gray, from Saturday to Monday. On Saturday a most delightful day was spent hunting, and in the evening an impromptu dance was given. Amongst the guests ■were: Misses Wells. Bassett, Symes. 'Mears, and Peachc. Messrs. Messrs. 11. and P. Elworthy. Messrs. 11. and L. Orboll* Mr. and Mrs. Whittaker. Miss Orton. Miss Kelland. Mrs. (’. Kerr. Miss M. Kerr. Miss Shaw and Airs. Buchanan. Sportsmen are looking forward with keen interest to the Hunt Club steeplechase, which will shortly take place. Mrs. E. Nicol | (Ashburton) rwvntly gave a delightful El ( TIRE PARTY. There were fourteen tables, and the keenly contested games resulted in Miss Muriel Bett w inning the lady’s prize (a
scent bottle), and Mr. Percy Cok won the gentleinan’s prize. After supper Alessrs. Salmond, C. Nicoll, E. F. Nicol!, and Seymour acted a charade very cleverly. Mrs. Owen was successful in guessing the word acted, and received a glove box for a prize. Songs were sung by Mr. T. Seymour and Mrs. W. Johnston. A most delightful evening was spent, and all wen* sorry wh»?n it was time to go, so merrily had the hours sped by. AN ENJOYABLE DANCE took place in the Kiosk (Ashburton) last 1* riday. Amongst the guests were: Mesdames Gibson. Branigan. and Pickles, Miss Snodgrass, Miss Grace (Blenheim), Aliss Fooks, .Miss Buchanan. Miss Orr, the Missies 'Thomas (Christchurch), Gibson. Hart.
