Deal Her. July 31. On Friday evening the annual volunteer ball, given by the “D” Squadron, was held in Ihr Alexandra Hall, and proved the most successful ever held here. There must have been between 3tM) and 400 people present, and t’lc accommodation of the hall was taxed to ils fullest. Two large marquees were erected against the hall, one for the supper and the other for sitting out. The hall was beautifully decorated with bunting and nikau palms and mirrors. The music was excellent. The ladies' reception commit lee were Me*dames 'Jaylor. McCiillagh. Koberls. and Ferguson. The supper-table was draped wit h red. white and blue, and the Howers were arum lilies, sent up from Auckland for the occasion. The tables were laden with all sorts of tempting dishes. The ball opened with the grand match, led by Captain Walker ami Mrs J. Scot t. The golf matches for the trophies presented by the president (Mr Bucklatid) and the .vice-president (Dr. Coates) were concluded on Wednesday. Mrs Matheson won the ladies' match with a net score of 106. and Mr Matheson the gentlemen’s match with a net score of 87. These matches caused a great amount of interest, the. scores being closer than in any of the other mateiies. The Waikato championship matches were played on the Cambridge links on Saturday. Several Hamilton players came through io compete. I'he day was most uninviting, a constant drizzle keeping up all day. There were no onlookers present. The ladies' comipittee had thoughtfully provided hot soup for the players before they started, t<» play, which was much appreciated, especially by the Hamill on play ers after t heir Jong drive. A marquee was erected adjoining the club-house, where the luncheon was -laid. Mrs < : . Ilunter had charge of the lunch** and afternoon tea. and was assisted by. Miss G-wyjineth. • Miss I*. Skeet was the winner of the eh.im.pionship with a score of 101 for the fourteen holes. Miss Farrer (Hamilton) coming next with a score of 110. Ihe llrst prize was a plated sugar . basin aifd cream jug 'on stand and four teaspoons ’ suspended cm the stand. the second prize was half a dozen balls. The gentlemen’s prize was won by Mr Matheson with a score of 111 lor the 18 holes, and Dr. Coates second with a .score of I 12. The first prize was a "gold sovereign case and the second half a dozen Balis. Dr. Coates presented the prize*-. Before leaving Dr Douglas, 'pre sic lent of the Hamilton ( lub, returned thanks for the hospitality extended 'to them and for the enjoyable games they had had. and hoped to see the Cambridge players in Hamilton next Saturday, when iie .would have pleasure in entertaining them at lune** his house.
