AUCKLAND PROVINCE Mr. and Mr*. E. Horton, of Auckland, are visiting Rotorua. Mr. and Mrs. Bevan (Dunedin) are visiting Rotorua at present. Mr«. Ansenne (Penrose, Auckland) has been staying in Rotorua. Mr. Henderson (Dunedin) is staying at Kia Ora House, Rotorua. Mr. and Mrs. Walker (Wairarapa) have just paid Rotorua a visit. Miss D. Gould (Oamaru) is staying in Gisborne with her aunt, Mrs Nolan. Dr. Parkes, who has been to New Plymouth on account of his mother’s illness, returned to Auckland on Sunday. Mr., Mrs., and Miss B“gg, of Balehitha, are staying at the Bungalow, Rotorua. Mr., Mrs., anti Miss Kirkaldie, and Miss Finch (Wellington) have been visiting Rotorua. Mr. Best, youngest son of Captain Best, was a passenger by the Victoria on Monday. He joins the Persic at Sythsey, ami proceeds to London, and will probably be away several years. Mr. Farmer, mine manager at Thames, has received an important appointment as manager of one of the mines in the West Indies. He and Miss Farmer will leave Thames this week. Mr. Frortsham Watkinson. of the firm of Mesrs Thos. Cook and Son, Auckland, went last week to Rotorua, in eompany with Mrs Watkinson, to take up the position of manager of the Lake House Hotel. Mr K. A. Eva, late ebiei clerk for the Union Company at Auckland, left for the south by the Rarawa last week to take over the position of local traffic manager at Wellington. The manager (Mr A. B. J. Irvine), on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Eva with a (revelling rug and straps, a silver shield on the rug being suitably inscribed. Mr Chambers, who came over from Sydney on Sunday, relieves Mr Cemtty temporarily as wharf manager for the Muddart-Parker Company at Auckland. Mr and Mrs Cemtty left by the Zealandia on Tuesday for Dunedin. They proceed thence to Melbourne and Sydney. Mr Chambers was purser of the Elingamite at the time she was wrecked. Mr Murdoch MeLean announces that, in response to a requisition signed by, 2200 electors of Parnell, he will be a candidate for that constituency at the net general election, in the Opposition interest. He wilt take an early opportunity of addressing the electors at various centres. He also intimates the withdrawal of his candidature for Grey Lynn. The Very Rev. Dean Foley, of the Teinuka (Canterbury) Roman Catholic Clureh, is lying at the Mater Misericordiae hospital, in Auckland, very critically ill. He has been in the hospital for the past fortnight, and grave fears are entertained as to his condition. The Dean mine up from Canterbury about eight months ago in the hope that the waters of Te Aroha and Rotorua would improve his crippled health, but instead of getting better he became steadily worse, and. a fortnight ago he had to be removed to Auckland.

There was a large attendance of members and friends at the Ellendale Presbyterian Church las week, when a farewell social was tendered to Rev. and Mrs J. M. Fraser, on the eve of their departure for Waipu. The chair was occupied by the Rev. W. Gray Dixon, who in very suitable terms spoke of the capabilities and characteristics Of both Mr and Mrs Fraser. During the evening Mrs J. Dick, on behalf of the Jardies’ Guild, presented Mrs Fraser with a neat and artistic silver flower stand; and Mr Fraser was the recipient of a handsome silver inkstand, presented by Mr S. E. Chappell on behalf of the congregation. One of the eldest officials of the Bank •t New South Wales passed away at his residence, Silver-road, Epsom, Auckland, last week, in the person of Mr Gilbert King. The deceased gentleman was •bout 69 years of age, and had been in the service of the bank for over 40

yean. He had occupied the ]>oaition of manager of several of the l>ank s branches in different parts of the colony, and was appointed to the managership of the Auckland brunch in 1892. Ho held this position for two years, after which he became inspector of the Queensland Lranclies. The climate told on his health, and paralysis seizing him, he was compelled to retire l from the service on a pension. Mr. King was a keen business man, possessing an intimate knowledge of banking and finance, and was extremely popular with his brother officers and clients. He leaves a widow, two daughters, and a married son in the Kaipara district. WELLINGTON PROVINCE. Miss K. Hoadley (Napier) has returned from her visit to Wellington. Mrs L- H. McHardy has been spending a few days in Napier. Mrs Palmer (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs Dean, of Napier. Mr. Norman Fitzht-rliert (Wanganui) has gone to Sydney for a visit. Mr. P. S. Maclean (NapierT has been making a short stay in Wellington. Miss S. Wilson (Wellington) is spending some weeks’ in Napier. Mrs. Cleghorn, of Wanganui, has returned from her visit to Blenheim. Air and Mrs. W. Empson, of Wanganui, are at present in Christchurch. Mr. Houstan ami Mr. Wray, of Wan ganui, are on 1 visit to Auckland. Miss Hoggard (Wellington) is paying a visit to Nelson. Mrs. A. Strang (Manawatu) is paying a visit to Wellington. Miss Willis has returned to Rangitiker after a stay of some weeks in Wellington. Miss Mcßeth, of Christchurch,.- who has been visiting relations and friends in Wanganui, has returned to her home. Major Johnston is back in Wellington after two or three weeks in Auckland and the North. Mrs. McLeod, of Wellington, is staying in Wanganui with her sister. Miss Cameron. Mrs. Wigram (Christehureh) is the guest of the Hon. Mrs. Arkwright, Wellington. Miss Gleeson is spending a few days with Mrs Von Dadelzon, Hospital Hill, Napier. Mrs. D. Riddiford (Rangitikci) has been in Wellington lately for a few days. Colonel Gorton (Bulls) was in Wellington lately for a golf match, Manawatu v. Wellington. Mr. Lionel Abraham (Palmerston North) has been spending a few days in Wellington. Miss Irvine (Wellington) is staying with her sister, Mrs R. Millton, Palmerston North. Mrs Ranald Macdonald (Christehureh) is in Wellington, staying with Mrs. Longhnan. Mrs E. W. Hitching* (Palmerston North) is visiting Mrs V. T. Hitching*, at Levin. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Johnston (Wellington) have gone to Sydney for two or three weeks. Mrs. and Miss Crosby (Christchurch) sue in Wellington for a week or so in order to 1«‘ present, at ths* marriage of Dr. Arthur Crosby, Medieal Superintendent at Mount View, Wellington, to Dr. Isabel Watson Dr. Agnes Lloyd Bennett has arrived in W’ellington to take up tins medieal practice of Dr. Isabel Watson, who i* shortly to be married to Dr. Crosby. Dr. Agnes Bennett went through the course at Edinburgh, and took her degree In 1899 at that University. Mr. C.’A. Fitzrqy (Hawke’s Bay) went to Wellington for the annual conference of the Acclimatisation Societies. He has Iseen energetic in helping on the work of the societies for a long period, and last year occupied the position of president of the New Zealand Association.
