THE WORLD OF FASHION

1

MARGUERITE.)

AN EFFECTIVE COSTUME. The gown itself was of the deepest and richest shade of blue. The skirt was made full, of course, with a kind of under-dress of the same material, while the edges of both the upper and lower skirt were stitched with orange silk. Of course, the line was so infinitesimal that it. was scarcely noticeable- Still, it was there, and the detail proved such a decorative one that it is most necessary to mention it. The bodiee was cut in pouched fashion at the front, with a couple of pleats on either side caught down with orange stitching. A double cape surrounded the shoulders, and here again, at the extreme edge, the orange stitching found decorative place; but the feature of the whole was the tiny waistcoat of orange suede, which kept the bodice together across the front, and was finished with the tiniest possible buttons of gilt. An underfront, which was scarcely visible, was made of ecru lace,’ the fringed ends of which appeared below the little hanging waistcoat. A tiny cuff of orange suede deeorated the sleeves. The hat arranged to be worn with this costume was in several shades of brown, with a touch of blue and orange set under the brim. The whole dress was extremely quiet, in spite of its vivid touches, and struck me as one of the most charming models that I have lately reviewed.

I am giving a sketch for a pretty gown for deep mourning, to be made in black silk eolienne, trimmed with crape. The bodiee is arranged with fichu folds of the crape, and a vest of tucked mousseline de soie. The full sleeves are adorned with flat tucks of the material and finished with long crape undersleeves, while the skirt is most effectively trimmed at the sides and back with graduated bands of crape. In front, it opens to show a crape panel, which narrows to nothing as it nears the waist.

lam giving you a sketch of a gown to be made in dark brown cloth. It is made with a three-tier skirt, tailor-stitched at the edge of each flounce, and the

bodice is arranged with a narrow vest of pale blue corded silk, with very small floral embroideries in pale pink and green down the centre.
