Dear Bee, April 13. > Last Monday afternoon Mrs Barton gave a large “AT HOME” in honour of Miss Eva Champion, who arrived from Christchurch last week to give a concert in Hawcra. Miss Champion, who has been studying in Sydney, for some time, is the possessor of a rich and peculiarly sweet contralto voice, and has a decidedly brilliant career before her, judging from the comments of Madame Melba and Ada Crossley. Those who heard Miss Champion sing last Monday afternoon were very much charmed with her delightful voice and unaffected manner. Mrs Barton was untiring in her efforts to entertain her guests, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the delightful afternoon. Amongst those present were —Mrs Barton. Mrs Nicholas. Dr. and Mrs Westenra. Mrs Scott. Mr Barton, Miss Dingle, Mrs and Miss White. Mrs F. Lysaght, Miss Moore. Mr and Mrs Page, Misses Langdon (2), Mrs O'Callaghan, Mrs Stringer. Miss Whittaker. Mr H. Temple Atkinson, Miss Flynn, Mrs Butts, Mrs Tempter, etc. Last Tuesday night MISS EVA CHAMPION'S CONCERT was held in the Opera House, and although the audience was not as largo as one would have liked, it was an enthusiastic one. Miss Champion again charmed everybody with her singing, and was encored for all her items. Amongst those in the audience I noticed —Mr and Mrs R. Page. Mrs and Miss Worrall. Miss B. Flynn, Mrs Dwyer, Miss Reilly, Mr Bennett, Mrs and Miss White, Misses Winks (2). Miss Tempter, Mr and Mrs Baird, Mrs T. Alexander, Mr and Mrs O’Callaghan. Mrs and Miss Brett, Mrs Aris. On Monday nigiit a full house AT THE LYCEUM THEATRE greeted the appearance of M. Auguste Van Biene, the actor-musician, and his company in “The Broken Melody.” A few of the many there were, Mr and Mrs Cohen, Mr and Mrs Bagnall, Mr and Miss Keeling, Mr and Miss Larcomb, Mr and Mrs F. Mowlem, Mrs Bunting, Mrs Clarkson, Mr D. Warburton and Miss ('. Warburton, Mr and Miss Hankins, Dr. and Mrs Stowe, Dr. Graham, the Misses Fraser, Miss Dalrymple, Mr Bond, Mr Taggart, Mr Montgomery, Mrs and Miss Park, the Misses Mowlem, Mr Goldingham, Mr Pascal, Mr Sim, ete., ete. The weather lias broken and the different tournaments AT THE TENNIS COURTS are progressing very slowly. Last week the ladies handicap singles were finished. The final was played between Mrs Millton (2), and Miss F. Randolph (2), the former proving the winner. The handicap doubles have reached the semi-final, and it is hoped they will be finished this week. Both tennis tournaments are unfinished. Several Palmerston players are going to Wellington at Easter to compete in the tournaanent to be held there. Mr Gibbons and Mr Harden are entering for different matches, and Mrs L. A. Abraham and Mr Gibbons will play together in the doubles. Mrs F. S. Mcßae and the Misses Robinson gave the tea at the courts, last Saturday. Mrs Meßae was wearing a navy blue Eton eostume, hat to match; Aliss Robinson navy skirt, blue and white spotted blouse, navy hat with silk niching; Mrs Campbell, black cloth coat and skirt, with white doth facings, burnt straw hat with blue satin bows: Mrs Hitchings, navy sac coat and skirt, white cloth collar and cuffs, navy hat with blue silk ruchings; Mrs Fitzherbert, brown cloth coat and skirt, with brown velvet collar, brown hat; Mrs McKnight, black cloth Russian costume, white cloth facings, black "hat with tips; Mrs Barnicoat, black voile, white yoke veiled in black lace, black hat; Miss Barnicoat (Nelson), mourning eostume; Mrs Innes, navy skirt, eream and navy spotted flannel blouse, navy felt hat; Miss Randolph, grey and blaek tweed coat and skirt, w’hite eloffi waistcoat and facings, blue hat; Miss Fitzherbert, grey skirt, white muslin and insertion blouse, blue hat with silk ruehing; Miss grey Russian costume; sailor hat; Miss Nannestad, black skirt, fawn muslin

On Wednesday afternoon the citizens of Palmerston PRESENTED DR. GRAHAM, who is leaving this tow n, with an illuminated address. There were quite one hundred gentlemen present, and the Mayor. Mr Hurley, occupied the chair. Several of those present spoke in very flattering terms of the Dr., and wished him success wherever he went. Mr T. Wood, M.H.R., Mr G. Simpson, Mayor of Foxton, Mr S. W. Duxford. were among the speakers. A sovereign case and an album containing the autographs of the subscribers accompanied the address. In the evening a most successful social was held at the Empire Hotel.
