His Excellency the Governor presided at the opening of the Wellington lowing season on Saturday. Parr, the well-known Auckland barrister, left on Monday for Australia to recuperate, his health having lately been very poor.

The friends of Mr. J. Warren, of the Railway Department, who was for many years on the Auckland section, and lately transferred to Wellington, will be pleased to learn that he has been promoted to the position of inspector of permanent way in connection with ilie straightening of the WellingtonHutt line.

Mr. Henry Eaton, who for 30 years has been connected with Messrs. Da'lgety and Company, Christchurch, has been transferred to Tiinaru to take charge of their branch there. For many years Mr. Eaton has acted as cnief accountant in the Christchurch office, and his experience and general knowledge of the company’s attains will eminently fit him for the position.

A handsome gift has been presented to Mr Eversleigh by the members of St. Peter’s Club (Wellington). Mrs Eversleigh has been secretary of the club for some years, and much of its succes- has been due .to his tact and energy. At present Mrs Beetham and her daughter are the guests of Mrs T. C. Williams. Hobson-street, but they return to Brancepeth. Wairarapa, in a week or two, writes our Wellington correspondent.

Mr H. C. Brewer, Registrar of the Supreme Court, Auckland, who has been for thirty- years at work in the Supreme Court without any long leave, has been granted three months’ leave of absence on account of his late serious illness. It is hoped by all who come in contact wit.li the genial registrar that his holiday will have the effect of restoring him to complete health. Mr. I{. Goring Thomas, < Jerk of Awards, will be in charge during Mr Brewer’s absence.

A telegram from Chiistclnireli last week announced the death of Mr. W. D. wood, Hourmiller and runholder. Mr Wood on his arrival in the early fifties, erected a mill at Riecarton, alongside the Avon river, and carried on Imslness there for a great many years, the fine quality of his Hour becoming well-known throughout New Zealand. Some years ago the business was formed into a limited liability company under the designation of Wood Bros., Ltd., but Mr. Woods, senr., retained a large interest, and although SO years of age. attended the offices of Ihe company for a few hours almost daily. Many years ago lie purchased the large sheep station “Swynincoinbe,” at Kaikoura, Marlborough, and paid a visit there only a fortnight before liis death. He was one of those sterling pioneer colonists who did so much to develop the resources of the colony and lay the foundation of its prosperity on a sound basis. Few men in Canterbury were better known or more sincerely liked and respected.
