Mr A. R. Hislop (Wellington) has gone io Australia for a trip, and will visit Jlelbourne and Sydney before returning.

Professor Maclaurin (Wellington) has bought land on The Terrace, and intends to build there shortly. Miss Winnie Leys and Mr Cecil Leys left Auckland for a short visit to Te Arolia on Tuesday last. Mr Dunean Sinclair has been appointed assistant engineer to the Palmerston N. City Council. Mrs. Cashel and her daughter, Airs. Alf. Bayly, have returned to Auckland from Waiwera.

Miss Oliver (Napier) is visiting her sister, Mrs McPherson, of Palmerston North.

The Misses Dalrymple (Bulls) were in Wellington for the Hockey Tournament.

The Rev. S. Handover (Wellington) was a visitor to Palmerston North during last week. Mr and Mrs H. de Lautour (Te Araroa) have been spending a fortnight in Gisborne.

Miss Lyttelton (Canterbury) is visiting Gisborne, and is staying with Mrs W. Grey.

Mrs J. W. Henton leaves Auckland at the end of the month to join her husband in Dunedin.

Mrs Evans, New Plymouth, who lias been on a visit to Hawera, has now returned.

Mrs Broham, New Plymouth, has gone on a visit to the Old Country to stay with her brother, Mr Robert Govett, whose health is not very good. Misses V. and M. Russell (Flaxmere), Hawke’s Bay) are in 'Wellington at present with Sir William and Lady Russell.

Miss G. Runc-ie (Feilding) has returned to Wellington for a few weeks, and is staying with her parents at Kelbnrne.

Mrs A. Russell (Palmerston North) has been in Wellington staying with her mother, Mrs T. C. Williams, Hob-son-street.

Miss Brabant, of Wanganui, was in Napier to attend her sister’s wedding, which took place there on the Ist of September. Air C. Evans, who has been for some time learning farming at Hamilton, Waikato, is visiting Iris people in New Plymouth.

Mr Harry A. Adams, of Ponsonby, was last week admitted by Mr Justice Edwards, on the motion of Mr Hesketli, as a solicitor of the Supreme Court. Miss Maud Wingfield, of Ponsonby, Auckland, went to Dunedin by the ZeaJandia last week to stay with her relations while her father is in England.

Mr Leicester Matson (Christchurch) has bought Mrs H. J. Hall’s house at Sumner, and the family are moving there for several months.

Miss Ethel Hay, of Parnell, is at present staying with .Mrs Wells, of Oakleigh, Cambridge, for the benefit of her health after her severe illness. Mr W. Arthur, a well-known resident of Poverty Bay, lias decided to remove to Auckland after a long period of residence on the East Coast. Mrs J. J. News has been received that Miss Wilhelmina Sievwright, of Gisborne and Christchurch, has taken first place in the junor practical anatomy class at Edinburgh with l)G per cent, of marks.

Miss Olive Lusk, who has been spending the past three or' four months in Gisborne as the guest of Mrs Arthur Rees, returned to Auckland by the Moana last Sunday.

Mr and Mrs Hole, of Wanganui, have returned from their visit to Mt. Peel and Christchurch, where they attended the Grand National Meeting and other festivities.

Mr J. C. Peacock, the well-known tennis player, has left Whangarei for Sydney, where he plays with the New Zealand team in the inter state mat ches. He is said to be in very good form. He is the only Aucklander in the team, alt the others being Wellington men.

Some very successful competitions were inaugurated by the committee of the Ambulance Bazaar (Wellington). Among the prize-winners were Misses Oswin (2), Wakelin, R. McColl, L. Bond, Kennedy, and Mitehell.

Amongst visitors in Wanganui for the Hunt Club races were Mr, Mrs and the Misses Brewer (Waverley), Messrs D. Riddiford (Rangitikei), H. Wilson (Bulls), Mr and Mrs P. Wolton (Marton). Houghton (Marton), Gordon (llaweru), Forde (Waitotara).

Miss Hilda Hitchings and Mr C. L. Margoliouth, both of Napier, won the first prize in the combined doubles handicap in the open lawn tennis tournament held last month by the Queen’s Club. London.

Mr A. L, Beattie, chief mechanical enginer of the New Zealand railways, has been in the Thames and Karangahake districts on departmental business, and returned to Auckland last week.

Mr J. Snow Walker, of Inglewood, is another pilgrim to Canada. He left last week by the mail boat for San Francisco. en route for Vancouver, where he intends settling down near some ot his relatives. He will be conducted through America by Cook’s agents. Mr John Grigg has returned to the. Thames after a trip to Wanganui ami Wellington. At both places Mr Grigg delivered lectures on practical astronomy, and received very high praise from the local papers.

Air H. G. Watson, accountant of the New Zealand Loan and Alercantile (Gisborne), has been transferred to the Napier branch. Mr Watson will be greatly missed, as lie took a leading part in tennis and other sports, and was secretary of the Gisborne Lanu Tennis Club for many years.

Captain FT. Goodwyn-Archer has been appointed by H.R.IL Princess Christian, in her capacity of president of the Incorporated Soldiers and Sailors Help Society, to be honorary secretary of the society for this colony.

to Rotorua to .exchange position- with Atiss Payne. Miss Payne was formerly Matron of the Wcli.ngloH Hospital, but resigned the post for another at Rotorua Sanatorium. ,

We are informed by the New Zealand agent of the Lyceum Club (a London and colonial institution for intellectual women) that Mrs Edith Searle Grossman. an Auckland lady, whose writings are known throughout the colony, has been entertained at a tea given in her honour for the object of introducing her to many London literary celebrities.

The. 22nd anniversary of the consecration of His Lordship Bishop Lenihan was honoured last week by the children in tlie Catholic Orphanage, Ponsonby, who held a social, at which the Bishop was present. An enjoyable concert programme was gone through by the children, who were assisted by Misses Pauline Dempsey and Lily Thompson, and the Revs. Dr. Egan and Father Patterson.

Mr and Mrs John Prouse and Miss Prouse, of Wellington, were staying in Surrey when the last mail left. Mr Prousc has been doing very well indeed. He snug five times at St. James’ Hall and once at the Queen’s Hall, besides filling various engagements round about London. St. James’ and Queen’s are two very important halls, and at both of them Mr Prouse had much success. They see a good deal of Mr Santley, and Atiss J’rnusc, writing to a friend in enthusiastically of musical evenings they have had. The great singer’s voice, although he is over seventy, is still remarkable, and there is no younger man quite so good as he. Air Santley thinks a lot of Mr Prouse’s singing, ami lent him his own band parts for “The Vulcan” aiid “O Ruddier Than the Cherry.”
