CAMBRIDGE.

Dear Bee, August 20. QUITE THE SMARTEST BALL OF THE SEASON was given by the bachelors of Cambridge as a farewell to Air. C. Buckland, who is leaving for a trip round the world. It was held in the Alexandra Hall on Tuesday. The committee of bachelors, with Air. J. R. C. Richardson at their head, left nothing undone that could add to the enjoyment of their guests, and they were ably assisted by a committee of ladies, consisting of Afcsdames Richardson, K. E. Roberts, AVells. Alartyn, and Hally. The hall was most artistically defibrated with flags, garlands of lycopodium from corner to corner of the hall, tree ferns, and other bush greenery draping the walls. Tire stage was nicely arranged as a draw-ing-room for the chaperones. The music, which was perfect, was played by Alere"dith’s band, from Auckland. The supper was laid in a marquee erected for the occasion, and beautifully decorated with bush ferns, etc. The supper tables were laden with every delicacy of the season. The ball was opened with lancers, one set of which consisted of the guests of the evening, Air. and Aliss Buckland, the ladies of the reception committee, and the bachelors on the committee. Towards the close of the evening three cheers were given for Air. C. C. Buckland, to which he responded, thanking his friends for the pleasure they had given him in meeting' them all again before starting on his travels, and so closed one of the most enjoyable dances that has ever been held in Cambridge. Norman was much admired in white silk, made with much tucking and trimmed with Paris lace insertion, pale blue sash, and blue bow in hair ; Mrs. C. Peake, cream silk, bodice trimmed with rich silk lace; Mrs. Batty, blaek evening dress, red velvet opera"coat, trimmed with black and white Panne velvet: Miss Atkinson, black silk: Miss O’Halloran, black silk; Mrs. A. Gibbons, white silk, trimmed with ecru insertion, spray of pink roses on corsage, lovely red silk opera coat, trimmed with fur : Aliss Hally, recherche Hack silk gown, with accordion-pleated chiffon sleeves and cream be-ribboned laee frill round deeolletage: Aliss Mells looked exceedingly well in a becoming dress of pearl merveilleux, berthe of champagne laee, handsome opera eoat of heliotrope silk, with deep cream collar; Miss H. Wells, ecru net over white glaee silk, tartan sash; Aliss Williams, pretty white silk, with black velvet strappings on bodice; Miss Duffin, becoming frock of white muslin, with scarlet geraniums on corsage; Miss Hunt, black lace dress; Miss Evans, black voile and lace; Aliss Brunskill,

Clarke, pink silk, made with much gauging on bodice and skirt; Alias Clarke, white ac-cordion-pleated chiffon over white silk; Aliss Brooks, blue silk blouse trimmed with lace medallions, black skirt; Aliss C. Willis, rose pink satin blouse, blaek skirt; Miss Aladill, cream silk; Aliss E. Cave, an effective dress of white figured net over white silk; Airs. Couper, cream satin gown, with net sleeves trimmed with white satin ribbon ; Aliss Pickering, white muslin; Miss Keesing. white silk, trimmed with insertion and medallions, champagne coloured opera cloak, with point laee and feather trimming; Aliss Dodgshun (Wanganui) was much admired in blackmerveilleux and chiffon; Aliss Campbell looked exceedingly well in black merveilleux. with cream lace bolero; Aliss Gwynneth, pink velvet blouse, with Paris lace trimming, black merveilleux skirt; Aliss Selby, black evening dress; Aliss Al.
