Dear Bee, J :ly 2>. The Hawke’s Bay Alouuted Rifles gave their annual ball in the drill hall, Hastings, on the 27th inst. The visitors on the occasion ineluded Lieutenautt'olonel Kettle. Hon. Surgeons De Lisle and Barcroft, Captain A. H. Russell, Lieutenants D. ( aiming. Taylor, BasilJones. Bishop, awl Captain Hudson. Mias Caulton's band supplied excellent dance music. t he winter lectures at the Athenaeum continue to attract large and appreciative audiences. Izist Tuesday evening, the Rev. J. A. Asher spoke on “George Meredith.’ “Chopin” will-be the subject of next week's address, which will be given by Air Harold Gregson. A popular concert was given at Waipukurau on the 24th inst. The vocalists were Mrs Brodie. Misses Large ami Tansley, and Mr Neilson. Miss Large’s fresh voice was much admired in “Cinderella” and "It was a Dream/’ Airs Brodie sang with her usual taste, and Miss Tansle.y’s laurels were as abundant as ever. Alys and Miss Todd performed duets skilfully on the pianoforte, and Air Hopkinstm gave two cornet solos. Air,’ G. I’. Donnelly has purchased three silver cups for presentation to the Hawke's Bay-Mounted Riflc-c.the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Chib, and the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society. On the occasion of' the State ball, at which -Mr and Airs Donnelly were pre-' •sented Io the King and Queen, Mrs Donnelly wore a magnificent Court dress of sequin net. with jet trimmings and chiffon frills. She carried a bouquet of pink carnations and orchids, the gift of Lade Ranfurly. and she wore a tiki round her neck, and a chieftainess’ comb in her hair. An interesting hockey' match took place on the Recreation Ground last Tuesday afternoon between the Napier Girls' High School ami the Afaroro Chib. The latter were successful by two goals to one. .Afternoon lea was elven hr the ladies during the interval. A sacred concert was given at the Theatre Royal last week by Airs Adair Blythe. w ho is shortly leaving for England. The instrumental items were provided by [Terr Lehmann, Messrs 11. G. and It. Spaekman. Songs were given at intervals by Airs Adair Blythe. Misses King ami Iwohill, all of whom acquitted themselves well. Aliss Twohill spring particularly with the beautiful song, “O Divine Redeemer.’’ , T AIAR.TORIE.
