Quinsy.

W HAT IT IS AND Il< >\\ TO I RKA I IT. Quinsy is an inflammation of the ton sils. which causes them to become •*<» swollen and painful that swallowing is not only difiicult. but occasions mu<-i> suitering. The word “ quinsy ” comes from two Greek words meaning ” a dog, ’ and “to press tight,” the idea probably being that the suffering caused by thr ailment resembles that caused by a Jog getting a grip of one’s throat. It may come from cold, following on a lowered state* of the health, or it max be caused by bad drainage. Il has a tendency to recur. Some people are very liable attacks of quinsy. The symptoms are shivering, fever, quick pulse, high temperature, headache, sore and swollen throat, pain, and dilli culty in swallowing. The swelling in

the throat sometimes gathers, comes to a head, and bursts, when matter is dis charged; after this there is great re lief, and the fever subsides. The patient should rest in bed in a warm, well-vent dated room. It is most important in all throat affections to se« that the patient breathes pure ait These complaints are very weakening, and a stuffy room will still further lowei the patient’s vitality. The application of hot linseed poultices assist, when an abscess is form ing, in bringing it to a head.
