CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, January 12. I cannot tell you of brilliant social functions because there are none to tell of. A great many people are still out of town, and every one seems to be taking a rest. A children’s party was given last week by Mrs. Wynn-Williams, Latimer Square, for her little grandchildren, and was greatly enjoyed by both grown-ups and children. Mr. and Mrs. L. Harley and Miss Wynn-Williams worked hard for the pleasure of the guests, and right well they succeeded. A beautiful Christmas tree, literally groaning with gifts for nil, occupied a centre position, and a dainty tea formed not the least part of the afternoon's amusement.

Mrs. J. D. Hall also entertained a number of her juvenile friends nt her pretty home, Middleton, one day last week, when games among the hay and rides on a pony passed the time, the latter being very exciting. Among the grown-ups assisting were Mrs. J. M. Turnbull and Miss Cowlishaw, Mrs. T. Cowlishaw. Mrs. L. Harley, Miss WynnWilliams, Mrs. H. Reeves, Miss Reeves Mrs. G. Gould, and Miss Lee.

Mrs. Guthrie Moore, “Le Maire,” had a farewell afternoon tea for Mrs. Malcolm (Opawa), prior to her departure for England. Each guest being a personal friend of Mrs. Malcolm’s, brought a little parting gift, which was a great surprise, and gave great pleasure to the recipient.

Mr. Hawtrey and his company b«v» been finding favour with the Christchurch people, who have been in crowds to hear the new plays, and even for “Message from Mars” a very full house greeted them. Mr. Hawtrey was called before the curtain, and he badc goodbye in a humorous way. Mr. llawtrey and company have had some good cricket with local players, and seem altogether to have enjoved their stay.
