The Girl With a Pretty Tilt to Her Chin.

lii

MARION MARTINEAU.

Do you know how to hold your chin properly’ Not one woman in a thou-and doe«. One woman tilts her chin too far for ward. u-ing it in a . -urious ducklike manner. Another has the habit of digging her chin into her neck, sp Hing ever' particle of pretty outline of chin and throat. A third carries her head on one side and so manages to distort her features and destrov whatever beauty she may once have had. N- w. the chin is an import nt feature and upon the manner of carrying it a great deal depends, much more than you sum se. A chin that is properly carried will make a pretty woman out of a plain one: and a chin that is wrongly held wiil spoil the best face. Tn the dramatic schools they take a new punil and teach her to carrv her head well. She must learn to walk with her head well set upon her shoulders, and this means that she must hold her chin up and her shoulders back. As soon as a pupil learns to do this she has taken her first lesson is dramatic art. To carrv the i-bin up does not mean to tilt it forward. Often a woman, trving to carrv ■ hin erect, will merely throw her head back while her chin is dug deeper than ever into ’er throat. The re~ult is a double chin. Carrying the head forward and the chin low is a habit. It is sometimes induced by the fact that the muscles of the neck are weak and the victim cannot hold ' ■ head erect without positive • d . In ■' ' ere i- nothing pc--sible except physical culture of the cords of the need and throat. Let them bbathed in .-old water and exercised. And let tl e patients try at all times * hold the neck erect and firm. SIMPLE EXPEDIENTS MAY CURE. A certain woman who had taken up public singing as a profession found that, when not singing, si e ha 1 a way of letting her head fall forward in a most ting eful anner. Try as she would, she could not break herself of the trick of leTting her chin droop. One day she hit upon an expedient, "i g stiff u 1 ite lin< n hooked it aroun 1 r.et ne :-k. It was loose, so that it did not bind the throat, but it was tall a rd sufficiently firm to sup- ■ rt the n k. Putting this ■ the ■ read. sang, practised ■ king, and went through with her rehearsals taking care always to have the back • f the i--:kr< -• against - ■ ' k of the linen collar. The result was that she soon 1 ;uire 1 th< trick fl Iding up her head. Al i in. nxi - to hold her head, wort i j ir of eyeglass frames putting them lost n her nose ind forcing herself to look through them.

>he wore them a couple of hours a day in her own room. There were no glasses in these spectacles, but the frames answered the purpose. In order to look through them she was obliged to hold up her head, to lift her chin, and the effect was excellent, for it got her into the habit of doing so. Another woman who had a habit of digging her chin into her chest held up her head in such a way as to force herself to look down. She really for a time looked at all things "over her chin.” as she -aid. and the iesult was that soon she had acquired the habit of holding up her head. LOWERED HEAD PRODUCES DOUBLE CHIN. For stout people there is no argument. The chin that is lowered into the neck will immediately transform itself into two. three, and even four chins, and still the woman goes on. digging her chin into her throat and letting more chins form. If the stout woman would lift her chins and would hold her head erect hetneck would immediately grow longer. And at the same time her chins would grow fewer. If she be a stout woman of only average proportions the double chins will disappear entirely and the neck will become shapely again. Even a young girl will have a double chin if - ' her chin down into her neck. and the woman of full development will utterly spoil the contour of her profile by doing s >. Practice lifting y- ur head an I see what a difference it will make in your appearance. The woman who wants to experiment with her chins can do so by taking a profile view. Let her look into the mirror. holding a hand glass in her hand If she will take a side view she will find she has a double chin ami can make a couple of chins by lowering her hea l still more. But let her lift her head and the chins will disappear and the contour of the face will come out strong and sharp. It is a simple little expedient. but such an aid to good looks. CHIN AND THROAT IMPROVE TOGETHER. The neck and throat are important in the scheme of beauty, for it is impossible to take a course in the physical culture of the chin without also improving the throat- The throat and neck should be round and broad, like a The neek sh >uld be large, though it should not look too heavy for the head. The flat, t! in ne :-k is not pretty, but the ne k that is round and tolumnesque is tl at is regarded as nearer the i ‘cals of beauty. T get such s neek begjji by f 11 awing -physical culture. T row the head back and keep it teas... for it takes time and patience, st ndi g vitl the head u[ ind the shin tilted. For fifteen minutes daily take head

swinging exercises, letting the head lie as far back as possible, then slowly lifting it. Do not sit and read with the eyes aslant, for this- besides injuring the eyes, will also make the neck stiff, thus preventing any further physical culture movements. Do not wear a tight, airproof collar, but try the ventilated neckwear, the lace stocks, and all things that will give air and freedom to the neck and throat. Try not to let the throat get into creases, for it takes time and patience, massage and exercise to get them out. Part of the day. if possible, let the throat be free and during this time let the air play upon it, even if only for a few hours in the evening. Cultivate the habit of holding the head not only erect but straight, not tilted toward either shoulder. And strive daily and all the time to let the throat support the head. When the neek is tired, instead of letting it sag upon the chest- place the head back upon a pillow and rest it in an easy manner. The practice of holding up the head grows upon one- At first it seems a bit difficult, and the neck will ache and the position become strained- but soon it gets to be second nature, so much so that it is difficult to walk with the chin cast down. Hold up the chin when taking y. ar daily exercise, and the result will be beneficial, not only to the looks, but to the health, for one gets better air in that manner and the lungs are capable of deeper breathingBut for the young woman, the beauty seeker- it should not be hard, and it is certainly as quick and as sure an aid to beauty as anything that could be invented in the way of physical culture.
