Some Exponents of the American DramaWe give this week excellent portraits of Mr Daniel Frawley and Miss May Van Buren, who have been delighting Auckland audiences with their clever acting. Theatre-goers will gather what Aucklanders think of Air Frawley when they know he is compared with Mr Brough, who held first place in colonial opinion for so long. Miss Van Buren is a charming woman, and a most sympathetic actress. o o o o <> Some Wall Known Actors and Actresses. On these pages this week are given some portraits of several prominent members of Mr George Musgrove's great Shakespearian Company, which opens its New Zealand tour in Auckland on October 28th, and which subsequently visits Wellington. Miss Dora Rignold, for example, comes of the famous theatrical family of that ilk. being niece to George Rignold. and daughter of William. She appeared in the famous Calvert Shakespearian productions in Manchester. and then went to the St. James' under Mr Alexander's management, and was then engaged by Louis Waller, from whom she joined Mr Musgrove. She will be seen
in New Zealand as Viola in "Twelfth Night,” Oberon in "The Dream.” ami Celia in "As You Like It.” Miss Nora Kerin is a cousin of two of the most famous and beautiful actresses of the day. and two of the most popular women in London. Miss Julia Neilsen and Miss Lily Hanburv. She. too, took part in the Manchester Shakespearian productions, and played sc-.-md lead in the Drury Lane production of "Ben Hur.” jshc was there en gaged by Mr Musgrove, and within 4' hours of that contract had an offer from I lie famous American impressario and manager, Mr Frohmann, to go to America in Shakespeare. Miss Marsden is a well known English actress, and has been pronounced the finest Puck ever seen on any stage. N'. less than six managers have at different times engaged her for the part whirl indeed is now recognised as her own. Coming to some of the men. Mr Denny's name is familiar to all as the Savoy comedian. Mr Denny acts Touchstone. Malvolio. and Bottom, and is uni versally pronounced inimitable in all With his reputation one can well believe it. Mr Athol Ford is a famouLondon actor, who created :> big hit some two years ago in a plav. "Th** Likeness of the Night.’’ His jreatest part here will be Sir Toby Beieh.
