A very popular appointment to the bench of Stipendiary Magistrates is that «>f Mr. A. I). Thomson, who has been clerk of the court at Wellington for some time. Mr. Thomson is at present in Napier, where he has gone to relieve Mr. A. Turnbull, S.M., who has been granted three weeks' leave. Mr. Thomson will then go to Palmerston North Io fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. Greenfield. Mr. Thomson qualified as a barrister some years ago. He joined the staff of the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui (his native place) in 1878. He was afterwards stationed at Feilding, was a relieving officer in various parts of the colony for three years, and was at one time second clerk at the Wellington Court, being transferred back to Wanganui in 1891 as clerk of the court. He remained there until three years ago. when, on the appointment of Mr. W. James to the bench. Mr. Thomson came to Wellington. Soon after his promotion was announced Mr. Thomson was the iccipient of a memento to mark the esteem in which he was held by his colleagues in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court. The presentation was made by Dr. McArthur, who sincerely congratulated Mr. Thomson on his advancement.
