CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, July 22. The Hawtrey Comedy Company, with the greatest kindness and forethought, arranged to play A HOCKEY AIATCH for some charity in ChristchurclT, and it was decided to divide it between the Destitute Patients’ Fund at the Hospital and the District Nursing Fund, the latter being a particularly deserving one, and entirely dependent on charity. The Hawtrey Company, who were in fancy dress, played against the Addington girls. The latter played up well, and at the call of time were only one goal behind the company, getting six goals to five. The Addington Club kindly provided afternoon tea. The members of the Hospital Eadies’ Visiting Association worked hard in disposing of tickets, etc., and though the cold weather and damp state of the ground prevented many would-be spectators from being present the match was a decided success. On Wednesday Mrs Bowen gave an At Home at her residence for the “old girls” of the school, to welcome back Aliss Alice Bowen, who has been in England nearly two years.A large number of friends were present, and a very enjoyable time was spent in ehat, music, etc., finishing with a dainty supper. Among the guests were Airs Percy Cox, Airs Cunnington, Mrs Ross, the Misses Cox, Olney (2), Hargreaves, Preston (2), N.

Campbell, H. Way, J. Berkeley, Wilsoa, and others. Mrs F. Graham gave a charming progressive euchre party on Wednesday at her residence, Merivale, when a large number of guests were present, -and enjoyed her hospitality. On Saturday Mr and Mrs J. J. Kinsey gave a few friends a great treat at thenresidence, “Warrimoo,” Merivale, having invited them to see some lantern slide pictures of the “Morning’s” visit to the “Discovery.” It is to be hoped that at some future time, with the consent of the Geographical Society, Mr Kinsey may be induced to show the Christchurch people some of these interesting pictures, for there is no doubt the departure of these two vessels from Lyttelton roused a great amount of interest in the expedition. The ladies of Christchurch are very busy ORGANISING A BAZAAR on a large scale for the benefit of the various volunteer corps. Each company has its own ladies’ committee for a stall, and a special arrangement will be made for produce, refreshment, and sweets stalls. The entrance money will be equally divided. The bazaar will not take place till next year, when it is hoped the new drill shed will be finished, and this function form a sort of opening. The ladies acting at present are: Mcsdames Julius. G. Rhodes, G. Harper, Trcleaven, A. Wilson, Bevan-Brown, Campbell, Symes. Curnow, Bennett, Marsh, Litchfield, Stringer. Misses Louisson, Pratt, Harper, Collins, Styehe, Tabart, and Pender. Mrs W. Reece did not go up to Relson after all, as a very decided change for

the better in her father's health took place, and relieved her of all anxiety, tta Friday Mr and Mrs Reece entertained some of their friends at their residence. “Xorhoteue.’’ Xorth Belt. Mrs Jarley's • Waxwoxks." by a number of young friends caused much amusement. Miss Maud Graham undertaking the part of Mrs Jariey. and rouse charming songs and mu-ic were given by Mr* Burns and other*. Among the guests were Mr and Mrs John Anderson, Mr and Mrs G. Harris. Mr. Hur.*t-Se;iger gave his second lecture on “Architecture" last week at Canterbury College. It was most interesting and well attended. Mis* Elsie Van A*eh (Mrs. Stevensl. of Sumner, < hristchureh. has composed a very pretty and tuneful piece of musie. “The Belvedere March." it is just out. and likely to become very popular as a change from the classical style. I regret to say Mis* Constance Ix’an. so well known as a tennis player, has completely broken down in health. She has been going from bad to worse for several weeks, and as I write is lying seriously ill at her home, Cambridge Terrace. Miss Denniston, I am glad to hear, is convalescing from her serious illness in Sydney, and we hope soon to welcome her back to Christchurch. A mask and domino ball is to take place at the Art Gallery this week, and much fun is anticipated. Onee more the Christchurch Cathedral spire tower* aloft in its original graceful outline. It was built in the first place by the generosity of the Rhodes family, and twice it has been restored bv the

members of the same family. This time it is covered with copper sheets, and surmounted with a lighter cross. Quite a little sensation was caused on the removal of the scaffolding, and an admiring crowd awaited the fast plunk. The last man descending the wire rope received a vigorous round of a,>p!ause.
