A somewhat startling incident which occurred in the Auckland harbour one night last week shows the necessity of providing adequate lights upon log rafts when they are being towed. The Devonport Ferry Company’s steamer Britannia was steaming across the harbour from Devonport about 5.45 o'clock. The night was dark and a tug happened to be towing a long raft of timber past the railway wharf. When making for the channel between the railway wharf and Queen-street wharf the Britannia encountered the raft, but fortunately was reversed in time to prevent a disastrous impact. A collision could not be avoided, but very little damage was done to the steamer. The incident caused considerable excitement on board.
