Mr. Seddon At Putiki
Mr. Seddon addressed a representative gathering of Maoris at Putiki. near Wanganui, last Thursday. He contradicted the report of his remarks at Papawai regarding the Maoris and the Boer war, and denied that he intended to leave the colony. He said that money would he advanced for roads and bridges through the Native Land Department on the same conditions as under the Lands for Settlement Act, and the cost of survey could be repaid by instalments spread over a reasonable period. The Government were greatly pleased at the manner in which the Maori Councils performed their duties, and he (the Premier) was of opinion that the Government would from time to time extend the Council’s powers. Tl° announced that Dr. Pomare had been placed in control of all sanitary matters affecting the Maori race. The Premier also stated that the Government intended to increase the number of young Maoris now studying for professional careers. They would be drafted from different tribes, and would receive professional instruction, on condition that they devoted their services to the welfare of the Maori race. The Government wished to give not only general education to the Maoris of both sexes, but also technical education.
