TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

(By Telegraph*—Special to “Graphic.”) CANTERBURY NOTES. CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday. After a long dry spell the weather broke just in time to spoil the North Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting on Thursday. Heavy rain fell throughout the greater part of the afternoon, and it was not only heavy but bitterly cold. Under the ci reums tarices th© attendance was fairly large, but the racing cannot by any stretch of Imagination be called Interesting. Pallas had a run-away victory in the principal event, the Coronation Handicap. The disappointment of the race was Calibre. Mr Harris’ horse had been striding along on the track in capital style, but in the race he ran like a pig, and either he was suffering from want of a sharpening up gallop or has gone thoroughly to the bad. I am loth to believe the latter theory, and I shall give him another chance before discarding him for the New Zealand Cup. Firebrand ran fairly, but ne is not destined, I fear, to return the 460 guineas he cost as a yearling. Scottish Minstrel started a red-hot favourite for the Rangiora Welter Handicap, and let down his backers with a thump. Puawal won easily, but with the daughter of Reflector out of the way It would have been a grand struggle, as only heads separated Good Spec, Skobeloff and Scottish Minstrel, who fin-ished-in the order named. First Shot won the Open Hunters’ Flat Race easily, and the ancient Seabrook was much too good for his two opponents in the Selling Race. Jibboom, a daughter of Master George and the hurdle race mare Mainbrook, accounted for thfe District Welter Handicap. The only really exciting finish during the afternoon was that for the "Flying Handicap, which resulted in a head victory for Signal, a four-year-old mare by Banner from the Artillery mare Foresight.

Since my last despatch, heavy rain has fallen in Canterbury, and the tracks at Riccarton have been holding for the nast three mornings. No work worth recording was done yesterday morning, but on Thursday Canniq Chiel and Glenaladale were associated in an interesting'gallop over the New Zealand Cup distance. They were on the plough and covered the distance in 3.46, which is pretty good time, considering the state of the ground. Cannie Chiel had the most to say at the finish, but as he is a veritable mud-lark, while his companion dislikes soft going, the gallop must not be accepted as a criterion of their respective capabilities. Golden Vein has returned from North apparently none the worse for his trip.

Racing folk were extremely glad to find Nonette’s name among the acceptors for the Ashburton Cup. The son of Seaton Delaval has been set a difficult task, but not an impossible one. It will be interesting to see how he fares against Welbeck and the others who have accepted. He will not have much time between his arrival at Riccarton and the race. However, we are sorry that the Messrs Nathan have abandoned their Intention to send a team South, but our regret is tempered by the fact that Sans Peur is coming to fulfil her engagement in the Welcome Stakes. The Secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club has been in communication with the Railway Department on the subject of delivering Southern horses to the Club’s spring meeting. The Railway Department will run a special horse train from Mosedel to Christchurch on either Friday, October 31, or Monday, November 3, which ever date suits the owners best. Horses will be picked up all along the line. The Railway Department requires that not less .than twenty horses shall have space engaged for them. DUNEDIN. The first general meeting of the Forbury Park Racing Club was held at Dunedin on Monday evening. There were about 70 gentlemen present, and the Hon. H. Gourley occupied the chair. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President, Hon. H. Gourlev; vice-presi-dent, Mr Jc. Rutheford; committee. Messrs N. Coughlon, J. Jeffs, W. Cuttie, D. C. Hazlett, H. J. Gourley, junr., F. Carter, John Ross, G. Hodges, C. Tilburr. Arthur Smith, J. McEwan, and T. Heffernan. The chairman intimated that the first race meeting was to be held on the 20th December. Tsaritza did not start for the North Otago Handicap, the principal event decided at the North Otago Jockey Club’s epring meeting on Thursday, and in her absence the race was merely an exercise canter for that consistent little mare "Whirlwind, who beat her solitary opponent Ardnarff in the commonest of canters. Her stable companion Secret Society beat a large field, which included Gojd Spur and Provna, in the Flying Handicap. Skipper easily accounted for the hurdle race. St. Ronald, a gelding by Clanranald, appropriated the Clifton Welter Handicap, and Covenant Maid (a mare by the St. George—Sierra horse Mount Royal) beat Barbette by a head in the Grandstand Welter Handicap. The Selling Race fell to Summer Rose, a daughter the Aprement horse Cajolery. The was spoiled by cold showery weather, but the course was in fairly good order.

Eighteen yearlings, seven colts, and eleven fillies from the Elderslle Stud will be offered for sale in Christchurch during the progress of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting. They include five colts and four fillies by Stepidak, two colts and six fillies by Gipsy Grand, and a filly by Wallace from Far Away.

The following feelings are announced from Elderslle: Brito mart© and Rune* Nuna, colts by Btepniak; Tempest, Fairy Mald knd Madder, filllee by Btepniak. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. At Riccarton this morning some useful work was accomplished. Narcissus went once round, finishing fast over the last part. Cannie Chiel and Glenaladale galloped a mile and a-quarter, the latter appearing to most advantage. Djln-Djin and Tercelet were companions in a strongly run six furlongs. Windwhistle and Dirk went a similar distance, finishing together. Somerled sprinted six furlongs by himself. Rosemere spurted five furlongs up the back alone, striding along freely. Punamu went a mile at a sound pace, assisted by Scylla over the last six furlongs. Calibre galloped a mile and a-quarter, Magnificent joining In the last seven furlongs. They finished fisgether. Dundas went six furlongs by himself, and Cora Linn accomplished half pace work, as did Lady Dundas and Cerise and Blue. Pallas spurted half a mile by himself. Skobeloff and Stepdancer went a mile and a-quarter at a solid pace. Firebrand joining in the last mile. Ordinance appeared to hold King Stork safe at the end ct a spin over five furlongs. Terrapin galloped once round, Clanburn assisting him over the last mile and a-quarter. Blazer galloped six furlongs in Imin. Battler assisting over the last three furlongs. Canteen ran a mile by himself in Imin 45 2-ssec. A number of two yearolds were worked after breakfast, To-mor-ruw, Leonore, Roscommon, and Treadmill shaping the best. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Fourteen New Zealand Cup candidates are now quartered either at Riccarton or in its vicinity. The latest arrival is Nonette, who, in company with Scotty and Geordle, reached Lyttelton yesterday, and came on to Christchurch early yesterday (Monday) morning. The three horses had a rough passage down, but were landed without a scratch, and beyound looking a trifle jaded yesterday were none the worse for their unpleasant experience. Whether Nonette will fulfil his engagement for the Ashburton Cup on Thursday is not known yet, but In view of his long journey from Auckland I should hardly think he would go to the post. Canteen arrived on Thursday looking in capital fettle. He took matters easily on Friday, but on Saturday he accomplished the best mile gallop that has been done on the grass track this season. His chance in the Cup may now fairly be said to depend entirely on his ability to stay. If he can get two miles he is bound to be very dangerous. Of the local horses there is very little that is fresh to be said. Cannie Chiel certainly beat Glenaladale in a gallop on Thursday morning, but as I pointed out on Saturday, the state of the ground was probably responsible for the latter’s defeat. At any rate Glenaladale is still the hope of his stable. Siege Gun and Romany Queen visit Riccarton occasionally. Both are well, but I take it that as long as the former remains so, we need not consider the latter seriously. Welbeck was in physic last week, and owing to the effect of the dose had to be kept idle rather longer than was intended. He is now in work again, and apparently none the worse for his enforced rest. Unless Calibre has turned rogue, he will probably run a far better horse at Ashburton than he did at Rangiora last week. In any event his running in the Ashburton Cup ought to afford a final indication of his chance in the New Zealand Cup. Terrapin continues to progress satisfactorily, and may be has an outside chance, a possession which, however, can hardly be credited to his stable companion, Clanburn. I have no fancy for Bombardo, in spite of his victory at Hastings, and for Punamu, although it is reported that the horse received solid support from her stable connections. Stepdancer is a smart ffily, and if she can be kept well, may win the Oaks, but if her owner cared to jeopardise her chance for that event by running her in the Cup, I hardly think she would justify his sincerity.

The following business has been done locally during the week:—New Zealand Cup: 500 to 10 against Punamu, 200 to 15 Halberdier, 200 to 15 Kelpy, 100 to 14 Pampero, 100 to 18 Nonette. New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap: 800 to 24 against Siege Gun and Scotty, 750 to 5 Fakir and Achilles, 700 to 18 Siege Gun and Ghoorka, 700 to 15 Glenaladale and Ghoorka, 700 to 5 Tortulla and Oingo; 600 to 5 Kelpy and Vladimir, 500 to 7 Tortulla and Achilles, 500 to 5 Melwood and Ghoorka, 500 to 4 Melwood and Exmoor, 500 to 2 Terrapin arid Vladimir, 400 to 2 Glenaladale and Somerled, 300 to 3 Tortulla and Grand Rapids, 300 to 1 Canteen and Oingo, 300 to 8 Nonette and Ghoorka, 300 to 1 Cannie Chiel and St Denis, 300 to 1 Sirius and Full Cry, 300 to 4£ Kelpy and Scotty, 250 to 2 Siege Gun and Gold Spur, 250 to 2 Nonette and Vladimir, 250 to 2 Porirua and Achilles, 250 to 2 Canteen and Red Gauntlet. The following horses may run forward in their respective engagements at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s spring meeting on Thursday :—First Hurdle Race: Long Tom and Sultana. Laghmor Handicap: Rosemere and Whirlwind. Ashburton Cup: Nonette, or in his absence, Welbeck. Braemar Welter Handicap: Count of Kolmar and Punamu. Spring Handicap: Muscovite and Pallas. Fairfield Plate: Wepener and Lady Brandt. Golden Vein looks rather light since his return from the North. Psyche, the dam of Vogengang, and her daughter Greek Maid, are to visit Ben Trovato. I forgot to mention in my last budget that the Elderslle yearling colts are all left entire this year.

Mr H. Piper win aj>t a * starter, and Mr Henry* a* handicapper for Ctetatchurch Racing Club durlux the present season.
