JUST LOOK HERE! Read What Leading Colonists Say OPINIONS THAT COMMAND RESPECT. “Brett’s Golonists’ Guide and Cyclopedia of Useful Knowledge” is all and more than has ever been claimed for it in the announcements made of the bonus offer open to our subscribers till October 31. The opinions that we have already published on the book by leading colonists we would again direct attention to. The late SIR GEORGE GREY, K.C.8., wrote of an earlier and much less complete and comprehensive edition than that now offered our subscribers : “ I have tested it in many ways upon a great variety of useful subjects, and am satisfied that it is by far the best work of the kind I have ever seen. I feel that its merits and usefulness in relation to all practical subjects on which a settler’s comfort and success depend, render it a necessary appendage to every home in New Zealand/’ It is unnecessary to enlarge on this tribute. It is a complete endorsement of what is claimed for a much later, and, we may confidently assert, much better edition. Similar and equally eulogistic tributes have from time to time reached the publishers from all parts of the colony. From those based on a perusal of the latest issue from a few just to hand we make the following selections, confident that the prominent positions held by the writers as colonists of long standing will ensure their being read with interest. SIR WILLIAM RUSSELL, M.H.R., of Flaxmere, Hawke’s Bay, writing under date June 20th, 1902, with reference to the present edition, says :—“ Brett’s Colonists’ Guide and Cyclopedia of Useful Knowledge reached me safely, and I soon commenced glancing through it, but quickly settled down to more careful examination, for I found it what it professes to be—a most excellent guide, and quite cyclopaedic in its information. Any young man may learn in it how to design his own ‘ small one-storied Eden ’ and what it will cost him to build it. And his bride, when he has won here can see at a glance how to retain his affections, for the recipes are so good, and may be so easily understood, that she will have no difficulty to ‘ feed the brute.’ And if they together study page 660 and the remainder of the chapter entitled ‘ The Family Doctor ’ they will be able to dose the baby without doing it much harm. The chapters devoted to the Garden, Orchard, and Spraying, are excellent, and give in a condensed form the information so many want, and so seldom have at hand when wanted. The Legal Memoranda are really useful, and give an outline of the law 011 most of the subjects which the country settler has, sooner or later, to form an opinion upon, and, therefore, ought to save him much perplexity and some expense. The articles on Sheep, Cattle, Horses, and farming generally, are written by men who understand the various breeds with which they deal. Of course the knowledge of the crops and breeds best suited to the local circumstances of soil and climate can be acquired by experience only ; but any intelligent man starting a farm on his own a ccount will be saved many blunders if he pays attention to what he can find in the Colonists’ Guide, which is, iu fact, a most useful and interesting handbook, well compiled, handy in form, and quite worthy a place on every colonist’s book shelf.” MR. HENRY OVERTON, a leading agricultural authority in Canterbury, writing on July 17, says:—“With considerable pleasure I have looked through your latest edition of Brett’s Colonists’ Guide and Cyclopedia of Useful Knowledge, and heartily compliment you upon the general excellence and simplicity with which you have contrived to place so much valuable information before the public. The great variety of information, touching upon almost every subject, makes the work a most interesting and instructive one for persons in all walks of life, but especially to the country settler. I can most confidently recommend the same as being the most useful and up-to-date work of its class, and one which no home should be without.” z MR. ROBERT HALL, who holds a prominent position in the pastoral and agricultural community of Auckland - Province, writes under date of July 7, 1902 : — “ I have to acknowledge with thanks receipt of a copy of Brett’s Colonists’ Guide, which I have perused. So far as I have a knowledge of the various matters dealt with in this compilation, I can, without hesitation, assert that throughout it is a most useful and reliable work, and should be in every settler’s home, as it deals with the various questions in connection with agriculture in a clear and intelligible form, easily understood, and sufficiently comprehensive. I have frequently during the past supplied myself with publications on farming and farm stock, and have to admit that invariably these works were disappointing. It is really gratifying to find that a work so voluminous and practical as Brett’s Colonists’ Guide and Cyclopaedia of Useful Knowledge (a publication so true to its name) has been compiled in this colony.” MR. WATSON SHENNAN, the well known agriculturalist and pastoralist of Conical Hills, Pomahaka, Otago, writes under date of sth August, 1902: —“It gives me much pleasure to let you know that I have received Brett’s, Colonists’ Guide and Cyclopedia of Useful Knowledge, and after giving it careful perusal I am of opinion that the title correctly describes the character of the book. I find that every page contains some useful information especially for the New Zealand farmer and country settler. It is the best Farmer’s book of reference I have seen.” MR. ROBERT HALL, of Enfield (near Oamaru), writes: —“ I received the copy of Brett's Colonists’ Guide and Cyclopaedia of Useful Knowledge, which you sent to my order a few days ago, and am very well pleased with it. It is indeed a very good book. The great variety of information touching upon almost every subject, makes the work a most interesting and instructive one for persons in any walk of life, but especially is it of value to the country settler."
