NEW PLYMOUTH.

Dear Bee, Ootober 3. Last Wednesday evening' and Thursday Gilbert and Sullivan’s amusing operetta, “TRIAL BY JURY,” ■was staged in St. Mary’s Hall, and was crowded both nights. Before the rising of the curtain a musical programme was gone through. Misses 6keet and Murphy and Messrs Ryan and Stoyle gave vocal items, while Mr Tutachka gave an instrumental item. The “Judge” was excellently imper-

sonated by Mr J. W. Ryan, his opening song being a great success. Miss Daisy Taylor made a decided “hit” in her part as the aggrieved plaintiff, while Mr H. Nelson ably represented the defendant. Mr T. Woodward, as the plaintiff’s counsel, was very amusing and effective, and his platonic attention for his client natural. As the usher, Mr Hume was very successful. Mr Bannister, as counsel for the defendant, and Mr C. T. Mills, helped to add to the effect of the scene, while Mr Bruce, as foreman of the jury, did his little part very well. To Mr Fletcher, great praise is due for the good singing, and Mr Stoyle, as stage manager, is to be congratulated on the result of

his efforts. Amongst the audience I noticed: Mrs Evans, Misses Evans (3), Mrs Govett, Misses Govett (2), Miss Mace, Mrs F. Fookes, M rs Courtney, Miss G. Shaw, Mrs H. Last Thursday afternoon the “Old Girls” challenged the present girls of the High School to a game of PING-PONG, ■which was held in the junior boys’ room.
