McLean, of Napier, ■who has been staying in Auckland, has returned home. Mrs. D. Macfarlane. of Lyndon, and family, are staying at Sumner for a few weeks. Mrs. Satchel!, St. Albans, who has had much sickness in the house, is staying at Sumner for a change. Mr.. Mrs. and Miss Ronalds, and Mr. and Mrs. F. Archer are shortly expected back from England. Hr. and Mrs. Moore, of Tennysonstreet. Napier, have gone for a visit to Taupo. Mr. Speneer Gollan. who paid Hawke's Bay a visit last month, is returning to England by the China from Sydney. Mrs. Gerald Tolhurst is visiting Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Tolhurst, Grant-road. Wellington. Miss Neave is also their guest. Dr. ar.d Mrs. Crooke (Christehureh) returned last Friday from a holiday trip to Nelson, and even there they had some bad weather. Mrs. Mounter (Auckland) has been spending a week or two with Mrs. H. J. Hali. Gloucester-street West (Christchurch). Mr. D. Mclntyre has purchased Mr. W. B. Cowiishaw's 'house. Papa-nui-road (Christchurch), and moved in last week. Dr. Ovenden left Christehureh last week for a trip to England: he expects to be away about seven months. The Earl and Countess of Seafield arrived from England this week on a visit to Christchurch. Mr. and Miss Townend are to meet them. Mr and Mrs Vawdrey Baldwin passed through Wellington last week on their way to Palmerston North, where they intend to lire. Mr. and Mrs. and Miss Stead (Christchurch) have gone to Rotorua. Mr. Stead is suffering from rheumatism, and hopes to get relief. Mr and Mrs B’akiston arrived in Wellington by the Monowai from Sydney on Thursday, and proceeded to the South Island. Dr and Mrs G. E. Deamer passed through Wellington recently on their •way to Featherston, Wairarapa. where Dr. Deamer intends to practise. Mr. and Mrs. H. Winter (South Canterbury) have been staying at Mrs Everest's, Montreal - street, (Christchurch). for the week for Miss Winter’s wedding, which took place on Thursday. Mrs. Montgomerie (Wanganui) is staying with Mrs. Harding. Thorn-don-quay, Wellington. She came down to meet her daughter, who returned from a trip to England by the Rimutaka. .Mr George Fi.-her. M.H.R. for Wellington. was recently presented with a handsome gold watch and chain by the members of the Dock League, with which Mr Fisher has actively Identified himself. Mrs W. Barton (Trentham). who has l»een for some time in Wellington, in Mrs Menzies’ house, on Thorndon Quay, has taken the honse at the Lower Hutt recently occupied by Mr •nd Mrs Parfitt. —
The members of the Honse of Representatives presented Miss Alien, daughter of Mr James Allen, M.H.R. with a handsome silver vase, on the occasion of her approaching marriage, with Mr Montgomery, of Ellesmere.’Canterburv.
Great praise is due to the students of the Wellington Technical School, who have been highly successful in the recent South Kensington examinations. Miss Maud Kim'oell distinguished herseif by carrying off the national bronze medal and book prize, which is open to art students of the United Kingdom as well as to the affiliated branches in ail other parts of the world. Sir Arthur Douglas (Under-Secre-tary for Defence), who is leaving on a holiday trip to England, was presented by the staff of the Defence Stores (Wellington) a spirit flask, travelling beg. umbrella and rug. Mr O’Sullivan aeted as spokesman on behalf of the staff. In returning thanks for the gift. .Sir Arthur Douglas spoke very highly of the splendid way in which the Defence staff had worked in equipping the many contingents. A presentation of a dressing case and a goldmounted greenstone brooch was made to Miss Douglas, who is accompanying her father. A bazaar in aid of the Veterans’ Home was recently held in ■.Veilington by a number of young people residing in Home-street. Major-Gen-eral Babington performed the opening ceremony. The profit came to -£4O for the afternoon and evening. The principal promoters were Misses Jones. Hutchings- Croll. Cohen, Mackay (2), Hawley and Freeman (2), who were assisted by Mesdames Kinniburg, Harold and Barnes, all oi whom are to be much congratulated on the success of their efforts. Captain Harry R. Potter returned from South Afrk-a via the South last week. This young Auckland officer was mentioned in Viscount. Kitchener's final despatch. When he volunteered to go to South Africa he received a commission as a lieutenant in the Auckland Company of the Fifth Contingent, which left here in March. 1900. After serving under General Carrington, he was appointed to the charge of the New Zealand Battery at Zeemst, which was besieged for over six months. On being relieved by Bond Methuen, he acted as A.D.C. to that officer until he was reappointed to Zeerust, attached. to the Royal Artillery, and promoted to the rank of captain. He has been continuously at the front since he left here, about two and ahalf years ago. which, it is stated, establishes a record for a colonial officer in the late campaign.
