The Fantastic Lime Rocks of Hikurangi.

The Hikurangi Lime Rocks (Whangarei district) give to the scenery in that part a very striking appearance. Seen peeping out through the luxuriant bush they suggest old ruined castles. The picturesque must, however, give way to the utilitarian, and the roeks. some of which are 50 feet high, are being rapidly broken up and converted into lime for the use of the farmers in the neighbourhood. It should be mentioned that there is some difficulty in accounting geologically for the presence of these huge limestones in a locality the soil of which is clay. The settlers settle the difficulty by saying that Noah had them for ballast in the ark, and tipped them overboard there.
