AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, September 9. SHAKESPEARE CLUB. On Monday evening the members and friends of the Ponsonby Shakespeare Club met at the residence of Mt Charles Hemus, where a most enjoyable evening- was spent. The plays chosen were: “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” “Coriolanus,” and “Ulysses,” by Stephen Phillip, which were most admirably read by Messrs McVeigh, Jellie, Hamilton Hodges, If emus (2), Mrs Hemus and Misses Colegrove, Ockenden, Dempsey, Hemus, etc. During intervals several songs were sweetly sung by Mr and Mrs Hamilton Hodges. A dainty supper was handed round at the conclusion. Mrs Hemus wore a black corded silk, with cream silk vest, and cuffs and draping of cream Maltese Lit e; Miss Hemus was charming in a blue silk blouse, with white lace collar and pink chiffon chou, black satin skirt; her younger sister wore a navy and white spotted silk blouse, trimmed with cream lace, and black skirt; Mrs Joseph Macky wore a silk figured voile with vest and collar of black and white applique; Miss Ella Macky, all black; Miss Colegrove, black voile, and cream silk collar, brightened with Coronation red; Miss —. Colegrove, becoming black brocade, with transparent yoke and sleeves of black lace; Miss St. Clair black brocade, with rufflirgs of blaca and gold lace; Miss Graham, ivory white tucked silk bodice, contrasted with blue, and a black skirt; Mrs Claude Hemus, azure blue silk blouse, ami skirt of rich blue silk; Mrs Hamilton Hodges wor j black chiffon, spangled with jet, over silk; Mrs D<*mtpsey, black brocaded silk, with jet garniture; Miss Dempsey, canary coloured silk blouse, softened with chiffon, and a black skirt; a young lady, whose name I did not know, looked pretty in a pink and white striped silk blouse, and black voile skirt; Miss Ockenden, pale grey and white check gown, relieved with white silk; Miss Rendall, black gown, with white vest; Miss Robinson, blush rose piuk blouse, with yoke of cream lace, and a black skirt. Among the gentlemen were Messrs Hemus (2), McVeigh. Jellie, Robinson, Hamilton Hodges, etc.

PARNELL DANCE. A very pleasant dance arranged by some of the young people of Parnell, took place on Friday evening at the Oddfellows* Hall. The floor was excellent, the music by Marriage’s Band all that could be desired, and a very nice supper was served, the tables being prettily decorated with daffodils and violets. Callendar, Palmer; Banks Sellars , Lona '> Crater, Sellars Howard, Shera, Owen (2), Gorne, Ranson. v UNIVERSITY DANCE, A very enjoyable dance, given by the students of the Auckland University College, was held in the Masonic Hall on the evening of Friday, sth September. The inside of the building was prettily decorated with flags and evergreens, prominent among the. former were the University banners. Tlie supper, laid in the ante-rooms, laden with the season’s delicacies, was quite a picture. The ’Varsity colours figured prominently as decoration, the pale blue streamers and yellow daffodils making a very pleasing effect. The music was supplied by Meredith’s band. Among tho guests were Mrs W. Coleman, in a handsome grey and black evening cloak; Mrs F. Baume, black brocaded, evening cloak; Mrs Dr. Bedford, black silk, black and silver lace trimming; Mrs H. H.
