His Excellency the Governor and the Hon. C. Hill-Trevor have returned to Wellington from Christchurch after a ten days’ visit to Canterbury. Lady Ranfurly has, unfortunately, been suffering from influenza, which has prevented her from taking part in any of the gaieties which celebrate the Grand National week in Christchurch, and her return to Wellington is postponed until she recovers sufficiently to undertake the sea voyage.

Mr S. J. Bagnall has returned to his Auckland home after a trip to Sydney. Mr and Mrs George Bloomfield have gone on a trip to Sydney. Dr. Walker, of New Plymouth, has been on a short visit to Auckland. Mr Vernon, M.A., B.Sc., has been appointed rector of Palmerston High School.

Major O’Brien, of the Ninth Contingent, has arrived in Wellington from Auckland. The Hon. C. Louisson and the Misses Louisson, of Christchurch, are in Wellington. Mr Ed'ward Rees, late of Gisborne, has been admitted to the Bar at Pretoria.

Mr and Mrs Alec. Campbell, of Blenheim, are (staying at the Masonic Hotel, Napier.

Miss Tomlinson, of Nelson, is staying with Mrs Turnbull, of the Bluff Hill, Napier.

Miss Hilda Von Dadelzen. of Wellington, is staying with Airs Von Dadelzen, at the Napier Athenaeum. Miss E. Kirton, of Christchurch, is visiting Mrs Bull, of France-road, Napier.

Miss Babington (Wellington) has been, staying with Airs A. E. G. Rhodes during race week.

Aliss Zita Broad, of Wellington, is at present stajung with Airs Cornford, of Napier.

Air W. B. Common is out from England on a business trip, and is only to be found a few days in one place.

Captain and Aliss AlcClatchie, w r ho have been visiting New Plymouth, have returned to Christchurch.

Rev. F. G. Evans and Airs Evans, who have been visiting Tauranga, Te Arolia and /Auckland, have now returned home to New Plymouth.

Air W. Buchanan, Af.H.R., is recovering rapidly from the operation he had to undergo in a private hospital in Wellington.

Air Arthur Afyers has been elected a director of the Auckland Gas Company, in place of the late Air J. L. Wilson.

Air and Mrs Palmer and Miss Afoore, of Wanganui, have come tc Napier for the golf tournament, and are staying at the Alasonic Hotel.

Aliss Daisy Bendall, who has been staying in Napier with Airs Cornford, left for her home in Wellington last week.

Air Alounteney Jephson, who has been a visitor at Government House for some time, is spending some weeks in the South Island, where he is visiting various places of interest.

Dr. Peter Aloir, of Ponsonby, Auckland, has been appointed to the charge of the Wairoa Hospital, Hawke’s Bay, and left for Napier on Saturday by the Te Anau.

Air Charles G. Johnson, of the Wellington staff of the A.ALP. Society, has been transferred to Greymouth, in place of Air J. Stewart, who goes to Napier. Dr. Ewart, of the Wellington Hospital, has been indisposed for»som« time, largely the result of overwork during an unprecedentedly sick season. Air and Airs E. D. O’Rorke (Auckland) have been staying at Warner’s Hotel, Christchurch, for the National week, but have returned home t« Auckland.

Mr Frank Leckie, of the staff of the Government Life Insurance, Welling’ ton, was recently presented with a diamond scarf pin, on the occasion of his being transferred to the Old Age Pensions Department.

Mr R. B. Gore has intimated to the Wellington Philosophical Society that he is unable to act as secretary any longer owing to ill-health. His resignation was received with great regret.

Mr and Mrs P. Parfitt have left Wellington for Melbourne, whence Mr Parfitt has lately been moved by the bank. Mr and Mrs Parfitt have been residing in the Hutt for some years, and their many friends are very sorry to lose them.

Mr Campbell, of the Telegraph Department, Wairoa, has been promoted to Wellington. Last week Mr Campbell was presented with a silver kettle and spirit lamp from the members of the Presbyterian Church, and much regret was expressed at his departure. Mr J. Copithorne, who is leaving the service of the Wellington Harbour Board to set up on his own account, was presented by the staff of the board with a handsome tea and coffee service suitably inscribed. Mr W. Prince acted as spokesman.

Mr N. F. Haszard, surveyor, of the firm of Haszard & Johnson, Waihi, has accepted a position under the British Government for service as a surveyor in Africa. He leaves for England by the ’Frisco mail on the 29th inst. The engagement is optional for two years.”

Musical circles in the colony will be glad to learn that Mr Maughan Barnett has refused the offer of a good appointment in Australia, and has definitely decided to remain in Wellington, where he has done so much in educating and improving the popular taste. Messrs. K. Lucas and G. Hodgkin, the two gentlemen who have been deputed by the Cambridge University to make a tour of New Zealand m the interests of science, studying the fauna of New Zealand, taking soundings of the lakes, etc., arrived at Wairoa (Hawke’s Bay) from Auckland last week, and have gone up to Lake Waikaremoana.

Several dinner parties were given by Mr and Mrs Rhodes at Te Koraha during the National week, one on the Governor’s birthday, when among those present were Mr and Mrs G. G. Stead, Mr and Mrs Wilding, Mr and Mrs Wigram, Mr and Mrs O’Rorke, Mr and Mrs J. Gould, the Bishop, Mrs and Miss Julius, Mr and Mrs Ranald Macdonald, Miss Babington, Miss Elworthy, and Captain Campbell.

Mr A. Montgomery, Superintendent of the Kauri Freehold Gold Estate properties, at Opitonul, has been appointed to the position of State Mining Engineer to the Government of Western Australia. Mr Montgomery was educated at the Otago High School and School of Mines, and was formerly for some years geologist to the Government of Tasmania.

Mr H. D. Bell, Danish Consul at Wellington, was recently presented with a handsome illuminated and framed address by 'the Danish residents of the city as a token of their appreciation. A large number of Danes marched in the official Coronation procession in Wellington, and were afterwards entertained at a Coronation banquet by their Consul.

Mr Gillies, the Auckland golf champion, has arrived in Napier to play in the open tournament, which is now being held there. Mr Spencer Gollan is alro competing. The latter has presented a handsome silver challenge cup to the Napier Golf Club, for the winner of the championship two years in succession, or three altogether. Mr H. Kelly, the well-known footballer, who has been transferred from the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company to the Auckland staff, was the recipient of several tokens of esteem from his associates in . Wellington, including * handsome marble clock from the Municipal Building Society and a ♦Kinable pair of binoculars from the officers of the Insurance Company.

Mr W. Heywood, who is leaving the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, in order to go into partnership on his own account, was presented with a handsome travelling trank and a dressing case, the gift of the Wellington branch of the Loan and Mercantile. The general manager, Mr M. MacPherson, made the presentation on behalf of the staff. Mr Heywood is leaving very shortly for England and America.

Mr Woon, late chief of the mail staff, Wanganui Post Office, who has been promoted to the position of chief clerk, Nelson, was prior to his departure the recipient of a very handsome presentation of a solid silver tea service from his colleagues. Mr Mcßeth, who made the presentation, referred to Mr Woon’s long and faithful services in the local office, extending over a period of 11 years, during which time he had found him of infinite service to him in carrying out hrs onerous duties, and concluded by expressing the wish that the recipient would make as many friends in Nelson as he had in Wanganui.
