Industrious Danes.
Children in Denmark are taught to knit when they are five years old. Even in publie schools this is quite an institution, and in private schools it is the rule, an hour a day being devoted to that industry. Even in family life the same rule applies, an hour daily being devoted to sewing, knitting, crocheting, or some other form of needle-craft. An hour spent
thusz is not. however, by anj- means the limit of time devoted daily by the girls of a family, for they are always expected to have a piece of work in hand to be picked up at odd moments. If a chance visitor comes in for a chat, or a friend arrives to spend the day, both will certainly have their work with them, for conversation is not hindered by busy fingers, and the Dane abhors idleness.
