A Valuable Organisation.
The New Zealand Society for the i'roleel ion of Women and Children and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held its annual meeting last week. In peukirg to t lie report. Lord Cref”rly said be eon‘dered it an extremely good one. The Society had
ar. inspector for animals, but they Lad not one for children. He though 4 they should have one, and always ad- • orated such an appointment. He knew it was a heavy order, hut still hi* trusted i. worl I come in time. There could be no doubt that it was neglect they had to fight, and not cruelty. There was practically very little intentional cruelty to children.
but there was neglect and carelessness. What they wanted to do was l.i improve the lot of the children in every way they could. (Applause.) He noticeil the report suggested changes in legislation in regard to women and children, but he thought the change required was in the opinions of local authorities so that absconding husbands, who left their
wives and children, should be brought back again. In Australia, if a husband deserted his wife, the authorities brought him back again, but he understood that here the Board objected to the expense of £3O, and instead had to provide for the wife and children. He believed it was a wis f policy to go to the expense of bringing absconding husbands back again for if two or three* were so dealt with i‘ would stop others from going (Applause.)
