NEW PLYMOUTH.

Dear Bee, March 15. Our pretty town has been EN FETE for the whole week, having been chosen as the centre for the fifth annual contest of the North Island Brass Bund Association. It commenced on Tuesday with a DECEPTION AND GARDEN PARTY iu t he ' Recreation Grounds. There was a record attendance, and the gardens never looked ’more lovely, the beauty of the lakes being enhanced by the debut of the six white swans, brought over by our member, Mr E. M. Smith, from London. Twelve of the visiting bands played selections in turn in the rotunda, which were much appreciated, and afterwards the massed bands played “Hearts and Homes,” with much effect. But it was on Thursday that the great event, of the meeting took place, when an immense crowd of 8,000 people from all parts of the country, assembled to witness the MARCHING COMPETITION. The glorious weather, the glistening instruments, the flashing- uniforms, and the volume of sounds, as the different, bands marched past, completed a “tout ensemble,” tha£ has

never before been seen in New Plymouth. And at the conclusion the massed bands again played “Hearts and Homes,” as If ia one vast unison it produced au effect which will ever remain in the memory of those so fortunate as to hear it. The result of the marching competition is as follows : —Wanganui, first; Palmerston North, second; Denniston and New Plymouth, coming third. The points prize was won by Wanganui, with 329 points. This carries off the Challenge Shield and Championship of the North Island Brass Band Association.
