At intervals during the evening a band discoursed some very choice music, and vocal items were rendered by Mr. Hamilton Hodges and Miss Violet Mount, the popular young singer, whose singing of “ Annie Laurie ” was particularly sweet. Refreshments were handed round by the ladies of the club, and altogether a most pleasant evening was spent. Mr. A. Myers (president of the Auckland Club) presented the shield won by the Mt. Eden Club. The annual polo tournament held between the members of polo clubs in the Auckland provincial district to decide the possession of the provincial polo cup was opened on Wednesday afternoon last at Alexandra Park, Epsom. Beautiful weather prevailed for the function, and the play of the competing teams in the preliminary matches was witnessed by a large number of spectators, the ladies predominating. Afternoon tea was given by the ladies, and, was prettily set out in the wide-spreading pavilion beneath the grand stand; the decorations were of miniature sunflowers and white daisies.

On Friday last the attendance at the Polo match between Auckland v Cambridge players, was-greater than the .prior days. The Auckland players did their best to come off victorious, but were much handicapped by their ponies, their opponents being much better mounted, and therefore played with greater dash. Ponsonby, who is to be married to Mr. Bunny, of Napier, the first week in April, entertained a number of her friends at an “afternoon tea” last week. The rooms were prettily decorated with flowers, the tea table in the dining-room being particularly pretty with glass vases of white lilies, intermingled with grasses. Dainty dishes of sweets of all descriptions, with the ever-refreshing tea. were handed round, 'the guests were received by their young hostess, who looked charming in a white tucked muslin blouse and holland skirt, and was assisted by Mrs. Phillips, who wore a black and white foulard with black vest, and trimmed with cream insertion.
