NAPIER.
Dear Bee, February 21. The Athenaeum Hall, Browningstreet, made a capital concert hall on the 14th inst., when Mr T. G. Strong gave a fashionably attended musicale. Mr Strong was in good form, and did himself ample justice in Chopin’s “Nocturne in F Sharp,” Rubinstein’s “Valse Allemagne,” and “Mazurka Fantasie,” and Chopin’s “Fantasie Impromptu,” concluding with the favourite “Capriccio,” by Psckaikowski. Mr .Leo Buckeridge sang splendidly, and received an inevitable encore. He gave “When the Tide Comes in,” one of his most ad-
mired s»ng«. The Rev. J. C. Martin’s recitations were an enjoyable feature. Amongst the audience were Mesdames Hovel!, McLean, Goldsmith, Stedman, Davidson, Tanner, Williams, Smith, Kettle, - Misses Goldsmith, Williams, McLean, Seale, Heath, Tanner, Morecroft, Hovell, Connon, Kettle, etc. The Highland Society’s concert, given at the Theatre Royal, on the 19th inst., was a great success. Several well-known performers took part in the programme. Miss Tansley (from Danevirke) was warmly welcomed in “Jock O’Hazeldean,” and that beautiful little ballad “The Pansy.’’ Mrs M’Duff Boyd, also from the country, sang sweetly three Scotch songs, and “Castles in the Air.” Mr J. Neilson sang “A Man’s a Man for a’ That,” with chorus by the Choir. Mr T. Parker recited in costume “Pittin in the Cries.” Several Scotch dances were given by members of the Society, as well as the Irish jig, sailor's hornpipe, etc. The accompaniments were played by Miss Cole and Mr H. G. Spackman.
