When the peasant discovered that his goose had laid a golden egg. he was much troubled, and wondered what he should do. The next day the goose laid an-
other golden egg, and the peasant’s doubts were instantly dissipated. He killed the goose forthwith, “Why,” he exclaimed, shuddering, “if this thing kept on, I might be compelled to pay income tax!” This fable reveals something of the stern spirit that animated the village of tHe prehistoric period.
