HASTINGS.
Dear Bee,
August 2
The Annual Steeplechase Meeting of the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club was held last Wednesday on the Jockey Club's course. The Hunt Club Cup was won by Mr F. M. Nelson's horse Chance, and the race for this caused great excitement. The cup was presenteel by Mr J. B. A'Deane. There was a fair attendance at the races, though the uncertain weather no doubt kept a great many people away. Amongst those present were: Mr and Mrs Rhodes, Mrs and Miss Williams, Miss Lowry, Mr and Mrs A’Deane, Mrs Kettle, Miss Russell, in a black coat and skirt, and black hat; Miss Kettle, in a violet cloth dress, and a violet velvet hat; Miss Ormond, in a black coat and skirt, and sable necklet and muff; Mrs Smith, in dark green; Miss Herrick, Mr and Mrs Lowry, Mr and Mrs Campbell. Mr and Miss Carlyon, Captain Russell, Mr Groome, Mr Hunter, Mr Herrick, Mr Nelson, Mr Ellison, etc. A Bachelor's Bali was held at Kereru Station last Friday evening', and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Many visitors were present from Hastings and the surrounding country, and several coaches for the guests were kindly provided by the Ball Committee. The dance took place in the wool shed, which was quite transformed for the occasion into a delightful ballroom. An abundance of palms and ferns made a beautiful effect, and the supper table decorations were most artistic. Amongst the people present were Miss McDonald, Mrs R. Humphries, Miss White, Miss Williams, Mrs Beale, Miss McEachern, Miss Beamish, Messrs Humphries, Williams, Douglas, Jackson, Simmons, Anderson, White, Beamish and McCabe.
DOROTHY.
