WANGANUI.

Dear Bee, July. There was great excitement here last Friday when the snow was lying —in the vicinity of the town about three inches deep. Snowballing was the feature of the day. It started in the early morning, and eontinued till <three and four in the afternoon. There were some fine specimens of modelling in the shape of snow-men, who were posted as sentinels in front of some of our private residences.

Victoria Avenue was the scene of laaightter, anger, indignation, and ridiculous spectres. No one escaped being a target for the snowballing crowd, so that some of our most pro* minent men had no resource but to flee to some cover for refuge until the cruel volleys of the crowd were exhausted, which in one case the unfortunate fugitive was kept umier cover for three hours, when he was released in safety. The Wanganui Amateur Dramatic Society have been very successful in staging a play called “Betsy.” The Opera House was crowded on Wednesday and Thursday. “Betsy” was represented by Miss Gurr, who kept up the spirit of the play right through, and did her part admirably. Mrs Barnicoat, as “Mrs Birkett,” seemed perfectly at home on the stage, and suited herself to her part. Mr Swan, as “Mr Birkett,” was very amusing, also Mr Hall as “Samuel Dawson.” These were quite the life of the play, and proved themselves talented artists of the first grade. Mr Pawson as “Mr Adolphus Birkett,” adapted himself admirably to his part. Miss Nev combe, who took the part of “Mrs McManus,” looked very becoming in her walking attire, which was red dress, grey feather boa, and red and grey toque. Mr Prouse, as “Captain McManus.” had a difficult part to play, and succeeded very well in bringing out his points. Mr F. Hatherly, as “Dick Talbot,” was very Amusing.
