MAORI CHIEFS.

' Among the portraits of Maori Chiefs which we give this week is one Of Tuta Nihoniho, a chief of the Ngatiporou. It was this chief who presented to Lord Roberts a greenstone mere on behalf of the East Coast tribes. He offered to go to South Africa at the head of 500 warriors to fight against the Boers. His father, who was the uncle of the famous Major Ropata, was killed in the Hauhau war of 1865. At the time of the Queen’s Jubilee Nihoniho was presented by the Home authorities with a portrait of the late Queen and a sword.
